I bought this gun from Fireball last year in nice condition but the wood needed to be refinished. I finally got around to doing that and put it back together yesterday. The code is 10R if anyone can date the gun that would be great. I added the sling studs and will be putting a scope on it.

That Double Diamond checkering (if the wood is original to the gun) puts it at 1964

Thanks. Roy might've mentioned that but it's been a while.
How easy is it to adjust the trigger pull? This one breaks at 5 lbs

What he said. But I think I’d add a “damn good” to it!

Thanks! I was pleasantly surprised with the wood under that chocolate pudding type finish that was on it.

Looks very nice indeed.
Is that one of those nondescript 'Series A' marked guns? Sorta like an F but not exactly.

If your trigger is near 5# you're kinda lucky. Some are a lot worse.
The tang safety trigger and sear are best left alone. It's a short path to slam fires.

If it breaks crisp and clean without any travel you got a good one,

It does. I dry fired it a few times and thought it was just a little stiff. Surprised it was 5 lbs

My 99F in 300 dates to 1961. It has the tang safety and hand checkering. I sighted it in last week with a 2 3/4 Redfield scope (58-62) of the same vintage. It also has the big knob old style Weaver rings. It is one of my 100% period correct guns. I was able to get it to 2-2.5 MOA with Remington 150 grain factory ammo. Good enough for my thick Michigan woods hunts. That gun kicks like a ticked off mule! This is the gun that I found a bill of sale from 1964 underneath the buttplate. I found and contacted the grandson of the buyer from 1964, but he elected not to buy it from me. He was not a hunter or shooter. I only wanted what I paid for it. Oh well, I tried.

Well I mounted an older Redfield 2-7 scope with post & crosshair reticle that I thought would look cool on it last night. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to have as much eye relief as scopes on other 99's I've had. The eyepiece is larger in diameter and further back and it's hard to get my thumb (without a glove) on the tang safety. I have an old Leupold on another rifle I'm going to try on it tonight.

Millennials have no appreciation for what belonged to their parents or their grandparents. Oh well, that’s there loss and you know the old story about the efficiency of reinventing the wheel. Given time, all generations face similar problems and not taking time to learn the solutions of you predecessors is a severe handicap. Kind of like shooting yourself in the foot.

The Redfield has about 1/2" less eye relief It doesn't seem that significant in the pics but it's much easier to get at the safety with the Leupold
