Several years ago a survey came out on rifles used to kill moose in, IIRC, Sweden which reported the 6.5x55 was favored. Do any of you have a link to it?
Thanks in advance.

I have that info somewhere, but don't believe it showed the 6.5x55 was "favored." Instead it was used a lot, because Sweden has a lot of of 6.5x55 rifles.
The info I recall was that most big game cartridges worked about the same way in killing moose, considering how many shots were fired per moose, and how far recovered moose traveled after the hit.
Know I have the info somewhere, and will report when I find it. Of course, somebody else will probably beat me to it.

Here is a survey that Mule Deer posted back in 2007. Hopefully my link gives provides info for the "rest of the story". It was a 12-page thread back then. https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbt...s/1892758/Re_10_000_Swedish_Moose_died_t

Yeah, that is what I was looking for.
John, yeah favored is not the best word, after 11 years the main thing I recalled was that the 6.5 worked so very well on such a large animal and wanted the details.
Thank you both very much.

That survey had a lot of empirical evidence which confirmed what Jack O'Connor had written in an old article titled something like "It's Where You Hit'em, Not What You Hit'em With", and perhaps that article or another one by JOC contained this quote from a Canadian Indian guide who, when asked which guns were best for hunting, replied, "any gun good gun shoot'em good".

I haven't seen any new numbers but at one time Sweden harvested more moose than all of North America did.
Keep in mind that their harvest is mostly calves as calves are the most likely to not survive winter.
Having said that.......I have videos of a dozen moose that we have shot with various cartridges and I cannot tell the difference whether each was shot with a 270 or a 375h&h.....all of the shots were lung shots......

One article I read said that Sweden harvests around 100,00 moose annually and has a population of 400,000.

A Swede told me himself the whole "everybody in Sweden uses a 6.5x55 for Moose" thing is about 50 years behind the times. He said the .300 magnums are the most common for Moose now.

I lived in Sweden for three years 2012-2015 and never saw ONE person shoot any magnum... mostly 308, 30-06, 6.5x55, 9.3x57 or 9.3x62 with a few other metrics in there. Boars, bear, stag, moose and deer. I hunted them all with the aforementioned calibers and so did everyone else I met/hunted with. Also note that most shots are under a hundred yards...
