Who uses 30 caliber Winchester Power Points in a 30-40, 300 savage, or 308. I'm wondering how these work, at moderate speeds on smallish deer. thanks capt david

I've used 150gr PP in the 300 Savage for a long time with no problems.

Winchester Power Point ammo has been downing animals for me since the mid-1970's. A truly amazing bullet! Sherwood

Thanks for replies. But, as I said, I'm specifically asking about 180 grain. at those speeds. capt david

You didn't ask specifically about 180s in your original post but I used them for years in my 7600 (308). I don't know what your definition of "smallish" is but I never had an issue with them on northeast deer.

The 180's work fine on deer at those sorts of velocities.

Not really a small deer per se, but I have killed a red stag in Argentina with a 180 power point at .308 Win velocity. Worked just fine.

Those are good bullets, they hit deer hard, they don’t get up.

cd they been making and loading those 150 & 180 Power Pts for so long that if there was a problem it would have been dealt with long time ago. Even today with all the wonder bullets available in factory loads those still sell well. Use them with confidence. MB

I have used them in 270 130 grain, and in 30-06 with 150 and 180 grain, 308 in 150 grain, 30-40 Krag in 150 and 180 grain, 30-30 in 170 grain, and 375H&H in 270 grain. I can't say I have found ANY 375 bullet that works better and many not as good. White tail and mule deer, antelope, elk, bears, (Grizzly and black bear both) moose and buffalo. Nothing has been too big or too small for the Winchesters Power Points I have shot or seen shot.
Overall they have been FAR better then most other cup and core bullets, and honestly, most have done as well or even a bit better then some "premium" bullets.
The old Power Point is just a great bullet design.
I think it's all because of the thickness of the jackets and the allows of the lead core and jacket material.
Winchester's only "bone-head move" is not selling them ALL in every caliber and weight they make, to the reloading public.

Many hunters say good things about the Remington Core-lokt, especially the older Core-Lokt, but I have always seen the Power Point as its equal, if not better. I think it helped build the .243's reputation as a fine deer round.

I have collected spent bullets recovered from game for about 5 decades now. I have in excess of 100 in my collection, many taken during my years as an elk and mule deer guide .With some bullets I have had terrible, just terrible results. As much as I tried to like Cor-Lokt bullets, they seem to fail me way to often, including one from a 250 Savage that wounded a small mule deer doe this year. I have never had a failure with Nosler Partitions and have taken 45 head of deer and elk with them, A few years ago a friend harvested a large cow bison with a 300 Win Mag using factory Winchester 180 grain Power Points. Range was a mere 25 yards. The bullet was recovered in the off shoulder and looked picture perfect even after such a close encounter. I was impressed. I have since used the older 180 round nose Power points from my 30-06 to take 3 antelope. Not much chance to see a recovered bullet from them. Another friend took a bison using a 270 Win Power Point to take another bison. A neck shot and the bullet exited. Seeing pictures of a new sectioned Power Points show just run of the mill cup and core construction but the little experience I have with them they are impressive. Way better than the Remington competition from my limited experience.
