With a fresh coat of snow across Arizona on New Year's Day, I decided to head east from Flagstaff to Canyon de Chelly as I envisioned Spider Rock rising above the snow covered canyon. It was cold sleeping in the back of the truck at -3F that night and standing on the rim in the morning, but the view was warmth for a photographer's soul.

The barren tree against the snow really captured my eye.

This is quite different from the fall when the cottonwoods are a river of yellow.

A Navajo tale has it that the top of Spider Rock is white from the bones of the bad Navajo children whom Spider Woman has eaten.

As usual, great scenery and captures.

I can not think of a colder spot than the back of a pickup. Toss out a small tent and sleep warmly. Sleeping above metal with just some fiberglass above, and it's a toss and turn night trying to stay warm.

Have a good one,

1' - I have a small bunk and 4" foam pad under the fiberglass shell. That has been my set-up for 40 years. It was still cold as the water bottles in the ice chest froze overnight. I do have a Mr buddy heater that I turn on right before I get up in the morning to knock the chill off.

I remember in middle school reading "Sing Down the Moon" which took place in Canyon de Chelly. First time I've actually seen a picture of it.

Thanks.

Been there LONG time ago, no snow, but it was still pretty.

With the snow you bring out the best of a scenic wonder.

Louis, when the cottonwoods in the bottom change to yellow in the fall, the canyon also comes to life in nice color. When I was there in late fall, I could hear the turkeys yelp from the bottom right before sunrise.
Brazos- did the marathon course take her along the creek?
