Well lads, the plot thickens. All I could see on the boss was something like this ( ) but could not make anything else out. I also took a bigger magnifying glass and honestly, I can't make the call on a 6 or 8, but given the rarity, I'm going with a 6...This weekend a friend is bringing over a super-duper glass in the hopes of getting to see something on the boss... IF you want to risk buggering some screws, you can remove the buttstock and the same inspector/date stamp should be above the lever on the left side. Haven't seen a 50's gun without it there, I don't think. Being that it's a flat surface, it's usually struck much better. Not unusual to see lever boss stamps that aren't legible.

Here's a picture of what the stamp looks like under the buttstock. This is from a 1952 99EG.

Jorge, if you have the function on your photo program switch a photo of the LBC to negative . sometimes that works for me. maybe will work with the serial number too. still a sweet setup no matter what or when its made.

I need to take some more pictures for you guys, it's really a CLEAN gun. I am very happy with it. Never in a million years I would have thought I'd be completely enthralled with Savage 99s... Maybe my buddy Hatari will chime in, but he's a BIG 99 hunter, even a few trips to Africa.. This rifle just "feels" great!/

This rifle just "feels" great!/ That is the "thrall" - the mystery of the 99. It's a rifle that you point and shoot instinctively like a fine fitting shotgun. Enjoy!

Very nice! Only mod to it is the sling studs, but otherwise looks brand new. Love ones like that.

Oh, I take it they are after market? For a minute there I thought Savage had come to their senses and started putting them on their rifles like the rest of the know universe.

No, the only models that came standard with sling studs pre-1960 were the 99R and 99RS and Spiegel EG and... I think that's it. Guys, are those Savage studs? I know Savage sold them separate and you could add them on.

Well, technically the 1950's 99R's came with sling eyes, not studs. Should have 'em, tho never say never.
