Try Midway. They list 250 gr AB's at $28.99/50. Looks like they discontinued Woodleigh 286 and 320 PP's. Several other good bullets are listed. Natchez - Lock, stock and barrel - Midsouth and Cabelas list them at various times and availabilities. Do a search online for a distributor.

Enjoy

NFG,

It was only a bit of kidding...I guess I'll just hold my breath until I turn blue. wink

I am frequently accused of various things, but never a lack of humor or being a phool. grin

I am attached to my eyes and fingers far too much to mess with excessive pressures. eek

I guessed as much after I looked over the post again later, with all the happy faces. I'm way to serious sometimes before the coffee kicks in and I wake up or at the opposite end of the spectrum, after a bad hair day or messing up the last milling pass on a very time consuming and nice looking muzzle brake. I forget about MY tongue-in-cheek humor that is sometimes taken as not so humorous at times. Don't we all. laugh I figured you would come back and wake me gently if you weren't trolling.

My brother lived in Elko for a while, I lived near Las Vegas for about 20 years and I spent several years mucking bout that corner of Nevada shooting potguts mostly, all through the Humbolt NF and checking out all the coyote holes the miners left in their quest for yellow. Almost bought a place up near Gold Creek, then almost bought an old "ho" house built over a stream, but the title was so clouded you couldn't see the writing on the paper. Would have been an interesting place. I loved the history of Nevada and hope to move back there before I get much older.

Anyway...Enjoy

I bought a No. 1 in 9.3x74R a couple of months ago, but amazingly enough have not fired it.

But, DO have some experience with the 74 in various break-action rifles, including my Thieme-Schlegelmilch SxS double, which regulates perfectly at 60 meters (@66 yards) with 65 grains of H4350 and the 270 Speer, 286 Nosler Partition, or 286 Woodleigh Solid. This is a fairly standard load and gets around 2400 fps in the 25.5 barrels.

However, I saw my No. 1 as a great sub for the .338 Win. Magnum. Will be loading it with 250's of various makes (Nosler BT and AB, Barnes TSX, North Fork) at around 2700. Have not done this yet but it should be easily possible, as the 9.3x62 with 60,000 psi will get around 2650 with 250's.

Also, Elmer Keith based his .338-74 round on the 9.34x74R, blowing it out a little. This case "improvement" would have about the same effect as the 9.3 bore, and he had his top handloads tested at safe .338 Win. pressures--and they got 2700 fps.

I would confidently use such a load at 400 yards or even a little more, on about anything we'd like to shoot at 400 yards.

Will report further as things develop, but have full confidence in my estimates...

Going the opposite way here....When my 74R arrives I will be looking for a accurate cast boolit open sight load for hunting at around 2200-2300fps...Rugers website says the twist rate is 1:10 and that maybe a little fast for what I want to do...We'll see....

Please keep us updated. I'll likely cast some bullets too, once mine gets here.

Yes you are right luv2S...but that's what it says on the Ruger website...A call to their customer support to verify twist rate net me 8 minutes on hold before I hung up.
A 1:10 twist rate is more appropriate for 405gr to 440 gr. bullets confused.......My 9.3X62 has a 1:13/14 twist rate which should be good for bullets up to the 300-335gr. range going by the twist rate chart I'm looking at...Anyway she is ordered...Can't wait! grin

Great thinking luv2... If they do indeed come with a 1:10 twist, I'll just stretch my barrel until it becomes a 1:14 twist~~~grin~~~~

Wesite says it is 1:10 but that does seems fast, doen't it? The Nosler manual says they used a 1 in 14.

1 in 14 is just right for the 9,3X74R, IMO. I'll bet Ruger's info is mistaken, and it is 1:14.

I think I talked to you a couple of years age on another forum , about a little drilling that I got from a fellow that brought it home after the war as a war trophy . A krighoff ,16x16x8.57JR ,you called it a short Drilling .
An update , I went to Germany last Summer for a boar hunt. I took the drilling along and left it with a Gunsmith . He went completely through it and checked it out ,Fixed a couple of miner things and mounted a Smidt & Bender 1.5x6x42 in swing mounts . I went back in DEC. for a Red deer hunt and brought the Drilling home . It was a nice little backpacking gun before but now its a real sweetheart .Using the scope ,the right shotgun Barrel shoots a 16 ga.slug to the same point of aim as the rifle Barrel at 50 yards using 196 grn. bullet.
I am looking for a good deer load , I brought some 196 gr RWS back with me . However , I would like to load a lighter bullet 150 or 170 , any Ideas.

DB...

Great to hear from you again. my friend! I'm happy to see that you are doing right by that wonderful drilling.

I slug the bores in all mine, and I've found that most 8X57JRs have .320 bores, not .318. Try doing that. If it is .320 or close, you can shoot .321 32 Special 170gr bullets. Before we could get .318 bullets here in the US, most of us shot the 32 Special 170s in our "J" bore guns. I never had a problem doing it, but I NEVER ADVOCATE IT TO OTHERS. I have found the 32 Special 170s to be far more accurate in my Sauer 12/8X57JR cape gun, as a matter of fact. It has a .320+ (not quite .321)bore. I couldn't get it shooting with Woodleighs or S&B bullets, so I tried the 170s. My groups went from 6"patterns to actual 1" 100 yard 3 shot groups. My best luck was with some very old stock Remington 170 RN .321 bullets I've had around for 30 years.

Thanks for the update on your drilling.

DB,

By the way, are you getting into any blue grouse up in the Warners these days? I have not hunted there for about 10 years, but I had some good grouse spots back then.
