My dad was always a 7 Mauser guy, but bought a 700 7-08 MR probably in 91 or 92. I don't think he ever shot it before I took it over. Was always my go to deer rifle. Got on the Creedmoor wagon a few years ago, but was moving some guns around in the safe the other day and got out the 7-08. I had forgot how light and slim it is. Gloss bluing, wood stock, and 3- 9x Vari-X II. Classic.

This is another one of those opinion questions so there is not "right" answer - but you might get a lot of agreement on some of the worst factory rifles.

My Ruger MKII int the skeletonized stock comes close for me. $395 when I bought it new, no need to float the barrel or do anything special to it. Very accurate and who cares if the stock gets scratched or dinged? .300WM.

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.

A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.

I have owned and hunted with the Savage 99F for 50 years and it's taken the game for me. For hunting here in the Northeast it's been my choice.

For target and varmints the old M70!

It is possible that the blind hog has at last found a truffle. The deal has been struck. I'll do my best to post pics when I get it in my hot little hands.

A guy that I used to know from Boy Scouts gave each of his young sons 700 SS Mtn rifles in 7mm-08 . Laminated wood versions.

When I was a youngster, Remington came up with the 700 Mountain Rifle. It was chambered in various and sundry cartridges, but the greatest of all, was the 7mm/08. I saw my first one in a store called Sports Unlimited in Knoxville, Tennessee. It was several years later, when I had a job of my own and could afford to buy my own hunting rifle, that I set out looking for one. Unfortunately, by that time, Remington decided to build the rifle with a detachable box magazine. That particular set up wasn't appealing to me. In 1998, I happened upon an original floorplate model Remington Mountain Rifle chambered for 7mm/08, and happily purchased it. Unfortunately, it had been sent off to the Remington service center and Magna ported. The rifle was everything I wanted in a hunting rifle, and killed like the finger of God, but it was un-holy loud, owing to the porting. I put up with the ringing in my ears for many years and even loaned the rifle to friends who needed a light kicking deer killer. Many were converted to the tribe of the 7mm/08.

I kept that rifle till the divorce in 2007, and then lost it to the need for groceries. Now they are even more rarely seen.

I've shot all kinds of other rifles and cartridges, and they work too, but I am still a fan of that cartridge in that rifle.

If you have a Remington 700 Mountain Rifle chambered for 7mm/08 with the original floorplate action, I am interested. Let me know if you would be interested in parting with it.

I'll give it a good home.

About a week or two ago, there was one listed in the classified cause I about bout it. Not 100% on the floor plate vs dbm.

JOC SC BACO 270 Winchesters. They were made in limited numbers about 400 in both the tribute and the custom. There was a bit of fit and finish that make them stand with custom rifles and they shoot like it too.

^^^^Yes, I agree with that. I’ve got the same rifle in 30-06 with a Leupold 1.75-6X and it’s my favorite rifle.

Remington's best was the Mountain Rifle... and Winchester's best was the Featherweight...
