OK, here's the hypothetical. You are going to be transported back in time to the year 1800 (could happen). You can take one rifle with you. You don't know where you are going though. Someplace in the lower 48 or Alaska. You will need the rifle to get food and defend yourself against animals (we'll assume you are the only human being on earth). You might end up in antelope country, bear country, pheasant country, mountain country, anything.
Without explanation as to why or what rifle, simply state the caliber of rifle you will take. (You will only have as much ammo as you can carry--so if you're real strong you have an advantage).
Remember NO explaining. Just list the caliber. We all know that a .3xx can shoot bullets ranging from 1xx grain to 2xx grain and yadda yadda yadda. (Assume any ammo you want is available in quantity). Don't want to hear why the types of rifles available affect your decision. What caliber is the only question.
Here goes my answer:
.338 Win Mag

So far, this is the oldest I've ever been. Some days you're the dog. Some days you're the hydrant.

Point of clarification, not just the caliber, but also the chambering. There are bunches of .30 caliber bullets, but let us know which one you are taking if a .30 cal is your choice. i.e.:
.308 Win
.300 Win Mag
.300 Weatherby
.300 Savage
Wade

Ahhhh. My .224" projectile, will be chambered in a 223Remington. Of course the rifle housing this cartridge, will be the venerable AR-15. The exact configuration, the 20" Bushy V-Match Tactical Competition, replete with Leupold 3.5-10x mil reticle, and a compliment of 20rd mags. My favored projectile, will be the vanilla 69gr Sierra MK. My tastes, are simple. I only require the nuber of rounds,I can carry(quite a few). Thank you........

Leave it to me,to dismiss the fine print. Didn't mean to "cheat",but my decision is the same, for those aforementioned reasons...........

B.S.,
Your awake! Me too. I have an evening flight tomorrow, and don't go to work until late tomorrow afternoon. Did you get those pictures I e-mailed the other day?
I can't wait to share my reasons too, but am trying to play by the rules! Boy, those lawyers can be a pain!
------------------
Brian
The 416 Taylor WebPage!
[This message has been edited by BW (edited January 30, 2001).]

BW,affirm,on the photos. You chose a nice day,to grab a flight. Night op's,sound like LITTLE fun. I think we are going back to work, first of next week. No more late night chat, after that! Given the weather,I'll shoot some footage for you,in the AM. My hunch is,the AM is going to be FOUL!. You may be in for a BUMPY ride.....

Mike,
I just had to poke some fun at that one! BTW, check out the Gunsmith forum, I'm askin' about the 300 Win Mag to 375H&H conversion again.
Big Stick,
Thanks for the heads up on the weather! I've have noticed a direct connection to your post about weather, and then getting hammered about a day later!

Waders,
When do I get to tell everyone why the 444 Marlin is the best rifle?
------------------
Brian
The 416 Taylor WebPage!
[This message has been edited by BW (edited January 30, 2001).]

Brian,
Already been there and posted a reply. Same story as before.
All my rifles are now 375.
You undoubtedly saw Saeeds 416 Taylor results. He should get 2550 with Re 15 and 416 Hoffman. He might have to shorten that barrel a bit from the chamber end to rechamber to 416 Hoffman.
Mike
