What are you guys with 3.5 and 2.7 liter eco-boost engines getting for fuel mileage. I am only interested in 4 by 4 vehicles.

I had a 2016 3.5 ..I got 21-22 on a long highway trip . 17mpg around town

2018 F150, 3.5 EcoBoost. 19.6 mpg combined city and hwy. (about 50/50) since new.

I have a ā€˜16 F-150 super crew, 2.7l. Average mixed driving I get 18.9. Straight freeway driving Iā€™m over 23mpg.

Cool little motor really.

I have the 5.0 and two of my wife's brothers have the 3.5. All are 4X4 crew cabs. Mine and one of my BIL's are 2014's. The other is a 2016. We get almost exactly the same fuel mileage. A lot depends on the individual truck, where you live and your driving style. None of us do any real city driving, it is mostly rural 2 lane and some small town driving. We all get 16-17 for normal every day driving. On the hwy, if we keep it to 70 and under 19-20 mpg. If I drive 75+ it drops fast.

I don't tow anything heavy, 3500 lbs usually. I'll get just under 15 with the trailer on the hwy. Over the last 50,000 combined miles the readout on the dash says 16.9 overall. I know a lot of guys don't trust those, but every time I hand calculate my fuel mileage the readout is pretty darn close with my truck. It is never off by more than 1/2 mpg and is usually within .2-.3 mpg. I trust my trucks calculations with the way I drive. I have a Honda however that is always off by 2-3 mpg so I understand that these are not always accurate.

I have no personal experience with the 2.7. But by all accounts it is the fastest of the 3 and will beat the other 2 significantly in fuel mileage. And if equipped right will tow more than most people will tow with a 1/2 ton truck.

2011 3.5 with differential lock (whatever gears the locker came in)approx 17.5 mpg for the 290,000. The 2018 with 2.7 gets approx 20.5 mpg for the 5000 miles it has on it not sure what gears are in the 2018.

2012 4wd 3.5L with 3.73 gearing, stock vehicle, 18.9 average for just over 120,000 miles.

2018 4wd 2.7L with 3.55 gearing, all stock as well, 20.5 average so far at 11,000 miles.

The April Consumer Reports New Car issue said 13 city with the 2.7 and 19 combined overall. They said 12 city and 18 overall with the 3.5. The 2.7 is rated at 325 hp and the 3.5 at 290 hp. I would have thought the hp ratings would be lower than the 3.5 for the 2.7.They did pick the F-150 as the best full size pickup.

A shooting buddy bought the early 3.5 in an F-150 4x4 back in 2011 and he said the gas mileage was real bad going into a stiff head wind or when he got on it with the turbo, which was pretty often knowing the guy.

Those mileage numbers are better for the 5.0 and Eco-Boost engines, but not THAT much better than my 5.4 crew cab, 6 speed, 3:55, 6,500# F-150 4x4. I've seen 19 and 20 on the mpg read out for just highway stuff at a reasonable summer speed. 17-18 is pretty usual. Lower insurance rates for older vehicles, all the low end torque that I'll ever need and delusional I'm told for ever buying a 5.4 with 330 hp instead of a 5.0 or Eco-Boost.

I wouldnā€™t consider any other engine.

Im not a ford guy and will never own one, but when Fords own engineers said they personally would pick the 5.0 - that kind of tells ya something...

They polled ā€˜techniciansā€™ (NOT engineers) at a Ford dealership. Take a look at the video on YouTube (titled: Which F150 engine would a Ford technician pick?) and see how much youā€™d value the opinion of the guys who were polled. The video is actually hilarious.

The 5.0 was only ordered in one out of every four (25%) of 2018 Ford pickups.

Could you post a picture of a group your rifle shoots also. I might as well give up trying to get a truck that gets good gas mileage or a rifle that shoots tiny groups...

Consumer Report listed the 3.5 liter V6 at 290 hp on page 186 of their specs, but it is a misprint and should have read the 3.3 V6 is 290 hp. On page 96 they do list the 3.5 at 375 hp and the wild (twin turbo maybe?) 3.5 V6 at 450 hp. That has to be the one that they put in a Raptor F-150.

I just did a round trip of 1980 miles in a rented F150 / 3.5 with 1900 lbs in the back, mostly at 75 and 80 mpg. The computer said 19.2.

That's about 5 mpg than the Tundra we rented, and about 4.5 better than the Dodge with the hemi on the same trip........

The 5.0 is a solid engine as well. My wife had over 110,000 miles on hers when we traded in on the 2018. We just prefer the ecoboost.

2014 3.5 ecoboost 114,000 miles. I live on a mountain, Avg 16.6 with normal driving. I have gotten as high as 23.5 in the delta of Mississippi.

I have the 3.5 EB, my father the 5.0. Gas mileage is around 18 mixed for booth. Ease of towing in the 3.5 EB compared to 5.0 is almost crazy (he uses mine if he goes & picks up a car outta state). Both are 2016 model years.

I have a 15 Expedition XL 4x4 and have averaged 17.8 mpg over the 30,000 I've driven it. Cruise set 80 mph freeway driving I'm getting anywhere from 21-23 mpg. 3.5 V6.

Had a 2013 Supercrew with the eco boost. Got about 18mpg on the highway. 14.5-15 around town.
Only thing I didnā€™t like was listening to the electric fan run during the summer. If it was over 95 degrees outside the fan would scream while the AC was on.

I think our first was a 2016 crew cab sort bed 2.7 bone stock and the current one we have is an 18, same truck configuration also 2.7 I believe the current truck is giving 19-20 mixed driving and 22-23 hwy. The 18 has the 10 spd trans, I personally preferred the previous trans. Reasons being that it seems a bit confused on low speed shifts with the 2018 10 spd.

We love the trucks tho, both have been fantastic. I just took it off the hoist, did an oil change. I like the topside oil filters. 6 qts 5w30 full synth

I have a 2014 EB that I bought new. Now has 64K miles. Up to 50 K it averaged about 17.5. and then it started dropping of down to 13.5

. According to ford service the problem is carbon build up on the intake port and the intake valve. They recommended a flush/cleaner which helped some but it is now only getting 14-15. Ford wanted $4000 to pull the heads and clean valves, ports, etc.

I talked with mechanic friend and we are going to give it another flush. If that doesn't work he said we can pull the intake manifold and reach everything that needs to be cleaned.


If I had to do it again, I wouldn't

They have hopefully fixed that issue with the redesign in 2017 in the generation 2 Ecoboost. They now spray fuel on the valves with another injector to keep them clean.

I have a 2017 and my hunting buddy buys a new one every year. I am in them a lot. With factory Wranglers mine was an honest 21-22 on the highway. I put some load range E, one size bigger Falkens and it dropped to 18-19 on the highway. I am going to put stock tires back on it now that winter is over. I get about 16-17 in town.

My hunting partner has 4 F150s with 2.7s in them. We took one bear hunting last year. I pulled over and got out and lifted the hood I was so impressed. I had to see for my self that it was really a 2.7 liter. I drove most of the trip- 25-26 on that bear hunt. No idea what he gets in town as his employees drive them so he doesn't see the mileage.

My computer mileage is spot on with hand calculating it. Why anyone would buy a 5.0 is beyond me. Ford only makes it to appease the few old-timers that can't wrap their head around twin-turbo, variable valve timing technology.

Are there things I don't like? Yes, you have to have the truck on a lift to change the oil, You can hear the fan. Other than that, I can't think of anything.
