The 284 was designed to get 270 Winchester Performance in the Winchester Lever Action M88 and M100 auto-loader. Something it did fairly well.
But......... It's a shell made to fit in the shorter lever actions and autos Winchester made.

So the obvious question to me is why would you go through the trouble if you can make up a bolt action in 270 or 280?

Not that there is a thing wrong with the 284. It may be hard to find brass for, compared to the 270 or 280, but it works very well...........just like the 270 and 280 do. No better however.

To get bolt actions to feed it can take a bit of smithing because of it's rebated rim and slight body taper, but it can be done. However if you started with an action that fed the 270 or 280 just fine, and you spend the time and/or money to make it feed the 284 just as well, you will end up with a rifle that works "just as well" (No better however) as what you started with ---------except you'll be out the time and or money.

So yes you can do this. Yes you will end up with an excellent performer. Just like a 270 or a 280. No better however.

But you will gain absolutely nothing for the extra money and time you'll need to do it.

I haven't done it, but have considered it several times. I'd definitely want a mag box that enables something longer than a standard 2.80" Remington box in order to get the potential gains compared to the 7-08. Some people solve this with a long action, but once you make that leap, other cartridges make more sense in my opinion. I believe a Wyatt's box on a Remington (or clone) offers an option that gets close to 3.00", and perhaps a modified box on a Model 70. An AICS mag might be an option as well, but not sure there it will accommodate the larger diameter 284 case. Perhaps someone who knows will come along soon.

I'd have to think an ELDX, (select weight based on max range you intend to shoot) out of a 284 cartridge has great potential.

no extra time or money is needed to build a 284 winchester
brass is available and the easiest way to one is to buy a forbes rifle in the 20b model and send it back to Melvin Forbes at new ultra light arms and have him rebarrel it...
it will come back with a new barrel of coarse, re blued action, bedded stock with new paint ....it will look new and shoot great
depending on how much you get the donor model 20 for you will have around $2000.00 into it

Have one on a 700 SA, PTG bolt, Wyatt box (3.95” OAL), 23” tube, all put together by Rilfes Inc as their Ultralight model. With a Leupold 6x, it’s at 5.75 lbs.

Hits easy 3100 with 140-gr ttsx and R17 and goes, or has, about .65 MOA at 400 yds. For five shots. I doubt I need anything more for the big game I will be doing.

So far it’s accounted for nice cinnamon black bear, a big mule deer buck, a whitetail buck at an even 500 yds and a 6x6 bull elk. My favorite right now. It’s a well-designed cartridge that has been hiding in plain sight.

I shoot a 284 in a Savage 99 and it's a stone cold killer even at 2.8".

I messed around with the 284 Win in a Rem SA, Ruger M77 SA tang safety and Interarms Mark X. Hands down the Ruger dealt with the rebated rim the best. Feeding is flawless in the SA Ruger with no alterations to action. A second SA Ruger shoots the 6mm-284 also feeds flawlessly.

At a later date I had my gunsmith lengthen the mag box of the Ruger 284 to 3.1" with useable length of 3.050"

You can now buy the newer Norma brass made originally for owner of Grizzly Industrial when he had bullets.com operating. This brass is supposed to be far better than win brass. It is available from two sources.

Info on Norma brass: http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/2015/08/ultra-high-grade-norma-284-win-brass-now-available/

Graf and sons has it for a tad less than $1 a piece. Brunos about the same.

The 284 won't do a darned thing your 7mm-08 won't already accomplish.

If you're a rifle loony, find a good smith and git'er done. Reasons other than that are excuses. Gene's reply is sensible, and George's rifle looks pretty sweet.

Well, it’s kinda ugly really and as much as I like nice wood and steel artfully combined, “beauty” also is as plain and homely can do.

Darned seldom anyone who owns a 284 Win sells it.
Nuff said.

For 284 based cartridges I prefer a mauser or '06 length action and have no use for a 280 Rem (cause I already have a 284 Win)
.
Saying the 284 can't do anything the 7-08 will do is like saying the 30-06 can't do anything the 308 can do.

Sure, but by this reasoning eventually you’d get to the absurd; for example, the 30/06 won’t do more than the 300 Blackout. 😉

I don't see the point in buying a half ton pickup when a person already owns a perfectly good Chevy 1500 or Ford F150. Might buy a Honda Civic for commuting or a 1 ton for hauling. I.E. different rig for a different task.

If building a rifle close in performance to the 7mm-08 but for a different task, such as a belly gun to complement a mountain rifle, might as well go with the same cartridge and have component redundancy to simplify logistics.
