The 284 was designed to get 270 Winchester Performance in the Winchester Lever Action M88 and M100 auto-loader. Something it did fairly well. But......... It's a shell made to fit in the shorter lever actions and autos Winchester made.
So the obvious question to me is why would you go through the trouble if you can make up a bolt action in 270 or 280?
Not that there is a thing wrong with the 284. It may be hard to find brass for, compared to the 270 or 280, but it works very well...........just like the 270 and 280 do. No better however.
To get bolt actions to feed it can take a bit of smithing because of it's rebated rim and slight body taper, but it can be done. However if you started with an action that fed the 270 or 280 just fine, and you spend the time and/or money to make it feed the 284 just as well, you will end up with a rifle that works "just as well" (No better however) as what you started with ---------except you'll be out the time and or money.
So yes you can do this. Yes you will end up with an excellent performer. Just like a 270 or a 280. No better however.
But you will gain absolutely nothing for the extra money and time you'll need to do it.

I haven't done it, but have considered it several times. I'd definitely want a mag box that enables something longer than a standard 2.80" Remington box in order to get the potential gains compared to the 7-08. Some people solve this with a long action, but once you make that leap, other cartridges make more sense in my opinion. I believe a Wyatt's box on a Remington (or clone) offers an option that gets close to 3.00", and perhaps a modified box on a Model 70. An AICS mag might be an option as well, but not sure there it will accommodate the larger diameter 284 case. Perhaps someone who knows will come along soon.
I'd have to think an ELDX, (select weight based on max range you intend to shoot) out of a 284 cartridge has great potential.
Don't speculate when you don't know, and don't second guess when you do.

no extra time or money is needed to build a 284 winchester brass is available and the easiest way to one is to buy a forbes rifle in the 20b model and send it back to Melvin Forbes at new ultra light arms and have him rebarrel it... it will come back with a new barrel of coarse, re blued action, bedded stock with new paint ....it will look new and shoot great depending on how much you get the donor model 20 for you will have around $2000.00 into it

Have one on a 700 SA, PTG bolt, Wyatt box (3.95” OAL), 23” tube, all put together by Rilfes Inc as their Ultralight model. With a Leupold 6x, it’s at 5.75 lbs. Hits easy 3100 with 140-gr ttsx and R17 and goes, or has, about .65 MOA at 400 yds. For five shots. I doubt I need anything more for the big game I will be doing. So far it’s accounted for nice cinnamon black bear, a big mule deer buck, a whitetail buck at an even 500 yds and a 6x6 bull elk. My favorite right now. It’s a well-designed cartridge that has been hiding in plain sight.

I shoot a 284 in a Savage 99 and it's a stone cold killer even at 2.8".

I messed around with the 284 Win in a Rem SA, Ruger M77 SA tang safety and Interarms Mark X. Hands down the Ruger dealt with the rebated rim the best. Feeding is flawless in the SA Ruger with no alterations to action. A second SA Ruger shoots the 6mm-284 also feeds flawlessly. At a later date I had my gunsmith lengthen the mag box of the Ruger 284 to 3.1" with useable length of 3.050" You can now buy the newer Norma brass made originally for owner of Grizzly Industrial when he had bullets.com operating. This brass is supposed to be far better than win brass. It is available from two sources. Info on Norma brass: http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/2015/08/ultra-high-grade-norma-284-win-brass-now-available/Graf and sons has it for a tad less than $1 a piece. Brunos about the same.

Well, it’s kinda ugly really and as much as I like nice wood and steel artfully combined, “beauty” also is as plain and homely can do.

Darned seldom anyone who owns a 284 Win sells it. Nuff said.
For 284 based cartridges I prefer a mauser or '06 length action and have no use for a 280 Rem (cause I already have a 284 Win) . Saying the 284 can't do anything the 7-08 will do is like saying the 30-06 can't do anything the 308 can do.

The 284 won't do a darned thing your 7mm-08 won't already accomplish. Yep Sure, but by this reasoning eventually you’d get to the absurd; for example, the 30/06 won’t do more than the 300 Blackout. 😉

The 284 won't do a darned thing your 7mm-08 won't already accomplish. So everybody should drive Chevy F150? I don't see the point in buying a half ton pickup when a person already owns a perfectly good Chevy 1500 or Ford F150. Might buy a Honda Civic for commuting or a 1 ton for hauling. I.E. different rig for a different task. If building a rifle close in performance to the 7mm-08 but for a different task, such as a belly gun to complement a mountain rifle, might as well go with the same cartridge and have component redundancy to simplify logistics.

I have worked up loads for both the 7-08 and the 284. I was pleased with what the 7-08 will do, but the 284 does it better. At least for me.
I am quite pleased with my 19" Shaw barrel on a R77 getting 2960 fps and small groups using a 160 gr Nosler Partition. That is about 140 gr velocity for the 7-08.

I first intended to chamber the 7 SAUM but the ‘smith balked because of his history of feeding problems with it. Said the 284 fed like baby food in comparison. I haven’t regretted it. And it’s certainly enough in a five and a half lbs.

I went with the 284 case but decided on a 375 bore. The 375-284 is a fun little round. Built it on a VZ24 Mauser action, iron sights, Boyds maple stock and an ER Shaw 375 unchambered blank cut down to 21". Loads of fun shooting 270 gr Hornady RN blems, usually over a 4895 powder.
Murphy was a grunt.

Back in the late '80s a ULA in 284 was the hot ticket. I've never owned a 284 but have always like it. To me a 284 always had a cool factor which I realize doesn't really mean anything in reality.

It’s actually a well-designed cartridge that back then might have had some rifles with longer magazines and throats, but then back there in its inception they didn’t care about such things or have the bullets to make a difference either.
I think it was Jon Sundra who once commented there wasn’t much one couldn’t do with a 7 mm (I think) that could push a 150 to 3000. Well, the 284 can check that box in sporter barrels.

If you want a 284 Win get a 284 Win. Plenty of good things about it. I still use a couple 30-06s, they seem to kill stuff just fine too.
If I were going to want a light recoil 7mm:
- sub 6 lbs - 8 or 8.5 twist barrel
And there are some good long 7mm bullets out there. Magazine and throating would definitely be good considerations. I might want a long action for it, but if a short action is important just know it may have some impact on seating depth options and resulting velocity. Or you could be cool with 100 fps less velocity, and want a short action. You've only got to please you.

So the obvious question to me is why would you go through the trouble if you can make up a bolt action in 270 or 280?
Going to the trouble is what keeps smiths in the business .. I can think of less practically justified choices [with regard to custom and how folks spend their money] than just wanting a .284win ie; like those that have customs that live as safe queens with useless ornate engraving and fancy pimp walnut ..and careful chambering selection cause they are worried about resale value when their estate is settled....what are they thinking? ..

You just described a Fieldcraft in 7/08. I've no skin in the game--if he doesn't want a 7/08 why would I try and convince him to get a 7/08? And I've nothing against a Fieldcraft, they're a good rifle. Hell, if he wants to use a Dakota Model 10 action that's fine with me too! I've convinced myself the best chambering in 7mm is something in the realm of a 7 Mashburn.

Wasn’t suggesting you were; light recoiling 7 mm sub 6 pounds, 8 twist with careful consideration of magazine and throating for good long 7 mm bullets ... is a Fieldcraft. No more, no less.

The one and only 284 Win I had was built on a long action Remington. Zero invasion of the bullet into my powder space. Fun rig. Shot very well too. Loony fun times. So,on a long action,I'll opt for my favorite .284 the 7 Rem mag. The 284 Win is a great case with a lot going for it. I wouldn't sway anyone from building one. Life is short. Build what you want.

Pass the Fieldcraft 7-08.

I would highly recommend a new Win 70 action as the base. Use the WSM mag box and follower and it will feed perfectly. Be sure to either replace the ejector with the WSM one or just rework the existing one. The WSM mag box will give you 3.050” internal length and works great for the 284. I’ve build the same in 284 Win and 25-284 and they made great hunting rifles. The 25-284 is one of my favorite deer rifles.

I’ve a 6-284 that when shot out will become a 6.5-284. It’s on a Vanguard Stainless short action so going with AICS mag DBM with a view to shooting the 147 ELD.
I think the AICS mags would be the way to go with your 284 as well in case you want to shoot the heavy ELDs.

AICS binderless,is going to be rather trite for a 284 Win SALAMI and 180 ELD's. I'll shoot some pics this evening, but the Chrome is calling from the creeks and I gotta roll.

Got purty fished up,but will try to grab some pics and spill a few 1000 words, here in a bit.

284,260 and 6.5 Kreedmire side by each. 284 with a .264" 147 ELD above and .284" 180 ELD below...at binderless AICS COAL confines. Hint..................

You "get" to read about it and I simply do it...so pardon my shooting it all and then some, thus being afforded the luxury of not being forced to guess.

Thus your propensity to plagiarize and obliviously quantify, how Imitation is THE most Sincere form of Flattery.

You don't have anything to "spend". Congratulations?!?
I'm enjoying your Drooling Slur. Hint.
88's in a 22-250 are wicked,just as they are in 223,223AI and 22 Grendel...all of which I shoot,amongst a host of .473's. Hint.
If/when you see your first 8" 22-250,be sure to start a Thread. Hint.
20's at 3K fps in a Rimfire,do not suck. If/when you see your first Sound Rifle in 17 Whizzum,be sure to start a Thread. Hint.
Bless your heart for TRYING.
