What about the magical rifle that will go down in history as Remington's greatest creation? The legendary Rem 788 in 22 lr. If I am not mistaken, it was banned from competition because it outshot everything on the planet.
Some said the technology and design were not of this earth, so Remington was forced to stop making them.
Amazing rimfire rifles! (And the short stroke Nylon 65 Legacy Continental Deluxe pump). A lot of you forgot about that one! Few were imported into the US because they were designed to shoot the Euro-Metric 5.6x15R cartridge.

788 triggers were/are Dog Schit.
Hint...............
Brad says: "Can't fault Rick for his pity letting you back on the fire... but pity it was and remains. Nothing more, nothing less. A sad little man in a sad little dream."

I'll never forget taking my Nylon 65 on a moose hunt in northern Alberta. My native guide was mesmerized by its sound and performance. Nuk (my guide) said that when it fired, the report sounded decidedly German! But that made sense considering where it was made.
I fed his village for the whole winter after hunting that day. The Euro-Metric cartridges are amazing! Fired from a Nylon 65 or a Rem 788, they are the bomb!
Mike Walker had something to do with the design, but he never would tell me exactly what. He was sworn to secrecy by the company.

You must be thinking of the 580/581/582 series guns. And no- they were never "banned' from competitions because they "outshot" everything else...lol Good rifles, but no "magic" there. You and "Ranting" must be drinking from the same case of Whiskey

Ha ha! Shows you what you know! Who is Ranting?
The first Rem 788s off the line were chambered in 22LR and 22 WMR. They were taken to Remington's secret testing ground at Fort Apache. The US Army bought 1000 to be used with their interdiction teams in Vietnam and Chicago.
You must be young.
Walter Cronkite was arrested for asking questions about Remington's "mystery rifle". David Brinkley almost took his job at CBS because of it.
Now, the Nylon 65 was contracted by Remington because they had to feed the European market. They decided it would be chambered in 5.6x15R because not many Euros spoke English, but almost everyone spoke Metrical. They had to stop making them however, because of the Cold War. The Russians stole the design and started making knock offs for the Spetsnaz.
