John Wayne put out some good movies and also some real stinkers. He had his ups and downs. Most fans know he had a long career with a lot of movies over the years and a few TV appearances. I was just looking at the list of his acting credits on the IMDb. His breakout performance is usually credited as Stagecoach. It is astounding to me that he did 83 movies, by my count, before Stagecoach. That is almost half of his acting credits. You have to give the Duke a lot of props for hanging in there and doing B movies for years. I don't think actors got paid nearly as well in the old days.

At this house we watch him almost every time he is on regardless if we have seen it 5 or 50 times. Quiet Man is a favorite.

...look for the part in Tin Star where he jumps from the stagecoach to a tree then to the ground and whistles for his faithful horse, which proceeds to run off in a different direction, and Wayne has to chase it.
I laff every time. 25 cent walk for that horse. LOL

At this house we watch him almost every time he is on regardless if we have seen it 5 or 50 times. Quiet Man is a favorite. I know what you mean. There are several of his movies that I could watch over back to back. Quiet Man with a young and beautiful Maureen O'Hare, definitely. Big jake is another. I've seen Duke kill Richard Boone so many times. I've got a couple DVDs full of those old B movies, some of them are pretty good. Some of the A list aren't all that great, but I love most of them. 7mm

“The Searchers” The greatest Western Movie EVER! Not only was it the best Western ever made, but it's also one of the best movies ever made. I've watched it so many times that I know all the lines everyone speaks by heart. She Wore A Yellow Ribbon is my next favorite.

Even B actors made a fortune in those days. Because they worked all the time. The Searchers isn't even the best Western by John Ford starring John Wayne. That would be The Man who shot Liberty Valance.

I suppose most if not all actors have more than a few lemons out there. As far as Wayne movies, I never cared much for anything he did after McClintock.
A good principle to guide me through life: “This is all I have come to expect, standard lackluster performance. Trust nothing, believe no one and realize it will only get worse…”

If you look at what Hollywood was putting out at the time his earlier efforts were about as good as everything else. He grew with the industry. Material is what it is and some of the earlier movies had some pretty cheesy writing and filming wasn't what it is today. Although some of his stuff wasn't top drawer, he was an iconic actor. They wouldn't let him out of his contract to join the armed forces in WWII so he supported the war effort all he could.
We have some great actors today but he will always be at the top of the heap for me at least. He was an honorable man and that says a lot for any person that rose to fame in Hollywood. Most of the narcissistic jackasses that are acting today can't distinguish themselves anywhere but on the screen. In life their ideology stinks as bad as their personalities.
