Hang on a minute. From what I see of this mess, Smollett is the one who lied. If the scenario had played out as intended, no one would even know these two exist. It would have been two white boys who were hung out to dry.
It was them telling the cops the truth that finally sorted this mess out. OK......I'll type slower....... they participated in a hate crime for money.....the operative word being "crime". Just because they confessed doesn't make it go away.

Just because they confessed doesn't make it go away. Maybe you need to read for comprehension. They engaged in some street theatre for money. They were never supposed to be part of the narrative and were only found out through surveillance tapes. Their job was to rough him up and disappear. Roughing up a guy who pays you to do it and then shutting up about it isn’t a crime. What they guy you roughed up says about it is a crime.

Be mighty tough proving they had anything of value ruined... even if it was their reputations. Considering the reputation of Nigerians in general, their reputations can only go up.
