never had a problem with a Weaver, and I've had bunch of the K4 and K6s.....
and out in some pretty cold weather in No MN and WI...20 and 30 below at times..
and always thought the glass was as good as the Leupolds I had...

but then, I like Tasco World Class scopes for the money also..
so I gather that cancels out the Weaver thing to the purists...

The old short tube Leupold 1.75-6x32 was a perfect fit on a Marlin 336.

I’ve kicked the snot out of a couple 6x Weavers.... they’ve never faltered. My only beef with them is eye relief... it can get a little short above the .25-06 recoil level.

Agree Dog. I still have one on the first "big game" rifle I ever bought, a 336 in 1971, a 30-30. At age 11 I worked all Summer bagging ice to buy that rifle for a whole $89. Dad put the Weaver on it for me. I don't remember how many deer I killed with it, but it was substantial, and the number of hogs is off the charts. I LOVE whacking pigs with that thing.

Later Texas-made Weavers were sealed against moisture, earlier models were not--as were a bunch of scopes during that era. In fact some very expensive Euro-scopes weren't sealed until the 1990's.

I have to agree with the folks suggesting a 1-4x20 scope of some kind, I shoot straight tube scope in 1-4, 1.25-4, and 1-3 on my big game rifles and a lo of my coyote calling rifles. I shot Weaver K-4's in the 1960 and after I put my first Weaver V-4.5(1.5-4.5x20mm) in the early 70's I never look for a fixed 4x again. I will say that almost all of my deer hunting in northern MN and WI was still hunting or tracking and the wide FOV was the greatest value and if I did spot one at a distance there was plenty of time to turn it up to 4x.

I did purchase a new Leupold Freedom 1.25-4x20mm from Doug for $199. and it is a great little scope and will be going on one of my combo guns for coyote hunting. Even on a smaller coyote my 1-4x20's are 300 yard coyote rifles

Getting the job done

One of my favorites is the Weaver K 4 with a post and crosshair reticle. Killed many a deer with a Rem 742 30-06 with that scope on it.

Just picked up a used Trijicon TR-24, a 1-4x24 with pointed post. At 1X that’s a good scope for shooting with both eyes open. The green tritium triangle not the best for long range shooting but a neat reticle for fast, closer shots. It’s 30mm, heavier than 1” equivalent but not that bad. Less than a pound.

This one for hunting buds .416 REM build but would be a good hog gun glass. They’re very robust, less expensive, used, if you can find one. May be a bit expensive for what OP is looking for. Not fixed power but would do what he’s wanting to do.

Don’t know if it’s a short tube or not but my 336 wears a VX-3 1.75-6x32 with a German #4 I had had the Custom Shop install. I love it.

I think caliber specific scopes are a joke. Even the name is a joke because the proper nomenclature would be “Cartridge Specific”.

......... Another vote for the 1-4x 20mm Leupold.... Had one on my 30-30 since about 2002. I wouldn't go over 4x on a 30-30 and mines basically a woods gun and depending on the woods it's set on 1 or 2x a lot. .. Great big field of view and quick to use and for that stuff I like the heavy duplex. To me that size and the 20mm objective look just right on a 30-30 lever gun. Bigger scopes with bigger objectives seem out of place on a gun like that IMHO.

I agree a 20mm objective is just about right on a 30-30.

I have those with the standard cross hair, and standard 150yd parallax free on a bunch of rifles. Great scopes for short to intermediate ranges.

Similarly, I am very happy with the 2-7x32 Hawke I just bought for about for about $100. Fully multicoated and seems perfect for a lever action 30/30 -especially for a kid. 50mm Nightforce- really? Sense a missing sarcasm font there and possible Stick reference.

I am a long time proponent and owner of fixed Weavers (which are great ) but brightness and features of newer scopes have me migrating off my traditional fixed powers and feeling like I have gained something. Going in to the field at 2 or 3x has been a welcome "eye opening" experience. The upper mag for range time is nice too. If sold on a fixed the Weaver 4x has worked nice on a 336 for me. Terrific adjustments.

I ended up with a VX3 1-5 #4 reticle on my 30-30: really liking it too!

My old K-6 has plenty of eye relief. However, the optics on those old scopes aren't what they are today.

I have an old Redfield fixed 4X I bought with a rifle in 1966 that is pretty damned clear for it's age. It's on my Winchester 94 AE .30-30.

Leupold makes a nice fixed 4X. I think you can buy it for under $300. For whatever reason the fixed powers are pretty expensive as compared to the variables.

The fixed Leupold 4x is an excellent scope for a Marlin.

This works for me, too. A few years ago, I got a Vari-X II from the classifieds that had been sent back and repaired. Seller sent the repair sheet with the scope. Best $100 I ever spent.

+1 on Weaver K4. I have a newer one my my 358 win and it has worked well. It replaced a Leupold VX II 3-7x33 that I had issues with. I used it this year in SD and took a decent mule deer buck when temps were under 10 degrees with snow. I have no reason not to trust the scope and would buy a Weaver K4 or K6 again.

Unfortunately, apparently Weaver has recently discontinued both the 4x38 K4 and 4x28 Rimfire. (Apparently the 6x38 K6 is still okay for now....)
