I'm thinking about living in the desert areas of NM or WY. I can tromp around in the desert in the winter, then drive 20 miles and be in the high country in the summertime. I like to get outside and amp, fish, hunt whenever possible. I don't know where you live now or exactly what your expectations are but "tromping around the desert" in the winter in either place is not really realistic, both can be too cold and windy to do much of what you are proposing. I am basing this on having spent quite a bit of time in winter in both areas. There is a reason that so many folks retire to Arizona. My advice to anyone who is thinking of retiring to a different locale for retirement is to spend at least a year living there before buying and settling in permanently. Even a year can fool a person though, in 2017 we had about 3 ft of snow on the ground with continuous overcast and snow all winter, the last two winters we never had more than 4 inches and most of that was intermittent. Which was normal? - Neither, usually it is somewhere in between the two extremes. I have seen quite a few folks move to this area based on their summertime experiences here, when winter came they found out it was a whole different ball game. Another thing to keep in mind is your health - once you get away from major metropolitan areas health care becomes a real issue. Just some things for you to think about when you picking out your place of dreams. drover difference between northern arizona and northern new mexico? edited to add N.M. politics are screwed up, it's a blue state in a lot of ways. Actually if this is what Moab Utah is. Cortez Colorado would fit in that nitch also..

In twenty years there are only going to be a few states where a caucasian male can live without being harassed and taxed to death. Those, in my opinion, are going to be Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, South Dakota, Idaho (maybe), and Wyoming. The rest are going to be infested with leftism.
I love elk too, but I'm not going to live under a terrorist lefty government to get to see them. I'll sneak into enemy territory every now and then to chase them then I'll scurry back to where it's safe. Really, you believe that? WOW

Also never understood living, working and building a family in a state you don't like and plan to leave someday.  and yes, I can say wastefully stupid Forest! States change. Maybe when a person started working and building a family they liked the place, no plans to leave, then the blue took over. It happens. P

I am retired here in Kentucky where my kids and grandkids are. Have a small bit of acreage and a lease for deer hunting for however long I’m able. Been drawn for Ky’s Elk hunt once. I’ve lived in several states during my work career. Now, I can’t imagine living anywhere else.
If we live long enough, we all have regrets. But the ones that nag at us the most are the ones in which we know we had a choice.

I would say Wyoming or Texas. Leave all the liberal BS far behind you. Both of these states need help to stay red in the future.
. The left, democrats, liberals, communist, and socialist are morally wrong. They do not care about women, children, and minorities. They do not represent the people from their states which elected them. They want overthrow the rights given to the American people by the constitution by changing, rewriting, or the destruction of the Constitution. Democrats cater to our enemies by voting for and providing them aid and comfort through sanctuary policies funded by US citizen tax dollars, they refuses to protect American people by refusing to fund our border wall, and leave our borders open and unsafe. They using tax payer money feed, clothe, educate, house, and free medical care. Plus illegal immigrants are allowed to travel anywhere in the USA freely. Most have no vaccinations against any diseases. They allow possible health problems to spread. Not to mention the laws they break, people they injury, or people they kill.
Democrats are trying to use the illegals to change the demographics of each state. Other states they are moving in non Christians to change those states. There are some states you can not walk the street in the daylight because of sharia law. There is no place in the Constitution or the USA for sharia law, it is not compatible with our western life and God.

I like where I am, but I have seen a lot of places in Utah, Idaho, Montana and South Dakota where I could be happy if the stars and planets lined up differently.

If you don't like the politics then get active. Go register voters, do mailings, go door to door. All your whining here isn't going to change chit.

Colorado was a hunter's paradise. Now the DOW thinks more about hiking trails the welfare of the animals. Now drugs legal and illegal have ruined the state and most cities. Denver and surrounding cites allow homeless to live and crap any where they want. Denver and surrounding cites are sanctuary cities. They give away driver licenses, free housing, free schooling, free medical, and free income to illegals. There are muslin training camps and skin head training camps in Colorado.
But even with all the problems the mountains are a great place to live and hunt. I refuse to give up.
