I grabbed one of the Lew Horton 3" jobs that were out around 2007. Shoot the same Bear Creek 230 as Sarge, or a 255 SWC in AR brass, both over Unique. It's a decent shooter although it's the only .45 I've ever found that doesn't like a 200 SWC with 231.
Could've picked up a 25-2 at a gun show here a couple years back for $400, still kicking myself over that one. That Bear Creek 45-230-FP (cast version of the Hornady 45187B) is the first coated bullet I've found that shot as well as any cast or jacketed bullet I've ever tried. A deputy I worked with carried a 3" 625 and that thing was lights-out accurate and a hoot to shoot. Sarge, Was your Deputy friendxs 625 3" also a Lew Horton special? I don't think I've ever personally seen a 625 3" that wasn't a Lew Horton. And, they are fetching big bucks these days. This was about 1992 and I believe it was from run of short, pre-lock 625's Smith made. Here's another one at Summit, which has had the hammer spur bobbed off. And yes they are pricey. http://summitgunbroker.com/s-w-625-3--.html

I remember when S&W first reintroduced the Model 25. Was it back in the 1980s?

Pretty sure it was when the model of 1955 Target got a model number in 1957 or so.

My Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson is stuffed away in a box somewhere; but here is an excellent read with a lot of great photos. https://tincanbandit.blogspot.com/2016/09/featured-gun-smith-wesson-model-25.htmlThe gun we are looking at below is a Model 25-5 which was introduced in 1978. The revisions leading up to the 25-5 are listed below: 25 no dash, 1957 25-1, 1960, extractor rod thread changed from RH to LF 25-2, 1961, eliminate trigger guard screw 25-3, 1977, round butt version offered, also by this time the 6" barrel became standard (instead of 6.5") N prefix on serial #s now used, the diamond was removed from the stocks 25-4, 1977, .45 Colt Deluxe Anniversary Edition 25-5, 1978, .45 ACP dropped as an option, the longer cylinder became standard
In 1982 the pinned barrel was replaced by a crush fit barrel, marking the end of an era. Also gone were the recessed chambers on the Magnum caliber guns. Many S&W collectors consider this a turning point in the quality of S&W revolvers.

Dang it now you guys have me thinking about a 1955 and wondering if I could live with the heavy barrel. I know where a really nice one is for sale locally. I’d have to get some nice Magnas for it since targets are too big for my hands.

TheKid, go for it! i still haven't pulled my grips to get the serial number on mine, but it does say 1955 and has 5 screws, that target barrel goes perfect with the hammer and trigger, really neat and fun revolvers to shoot, not heavy, unwieldy or unbalanced at all.

S on the front bottom grip frame followed by 1596xx, haven't got deep enough in the manuals RJM sent to figure out what the serial number of my revolver dates too, here's hoping it helps you pick/find a nice Auto rim/45 ACP S&W revolver.
