Trying to see if a gen 5 is worth going with over a gen 4 for a Glock 17? Anyone had any experiences with gen 5? Notice any better accuracy? Thanks

I don't have a gen 5 but you might be surprised how well a person can shoot a gen3, if your a bullseye shooter and can shoot 2 inch groups off hand at 25 yards with your 1911 I bet you could tell the difference, otherwise buy the best deal.

My Glockophile friends all agree that Gen 3 was where Glock should have stopped.
I don't know how they feel about Gen 5's though.

For myself, I had a Gen 1 17 that I did NOT like. I have a gen 3 26 that's fine, and a gen 4 17 that's fine.
The best Glock I own however is a blue label refurb Gen 3 22 that had the frame replaced but is otherwise original. It is the smoothest, the most accurate and it has the best trigger of my 5 Glocks. And all it took to break it in was enough ammo to wear out the frame. Its great now though. lol

The Gen 5’s and the 17m’s are the best guns Glock has ever made. Reliability, and accuracy are both improved over all previous generations.

I like G4's better than G3's, but the trigger on the G5's is definitely better.

The one & only G5 that I have has the best trigger of any of the Glocks that I own, even better than the ones with a fair amount of tuning, & the G5 has only had the connector changed, nothing else.

I like the finger grooves, & that's the only thing that I wish the G5's had.............& that's a pretty picky personal preference, & not a deal breaker for me; YMMV.

Thats hard to believe as they were already superior.

I've got a Gen 5 Glock 26, and really like it. I like my Gen 4 Glock 17 a lot, too, though. If the finger groves fit your fingers well, the Gen 4 is fine. If not, you might prefer a Gen 5, since they don't have them.

I wish I had kept my Gen 2 Glock 19 and 23 that I bought back in the 1990s.

Right. They were using the slogan "Glock: Perfection" at what, Gen 1, Gen 2?

I like the trigger better on the gen 3 better then the gen 4 (35). That’s just my opinion. I haven’t shot any of the gen 5’s though.

I recently bought a gen 4 Glock 19

I bought it over a gen 5 that was cheaper, because I did NOT like the forward cocking grooves on the slide.

To me, it just goes against all safety rules. "never point a gun at anything you're not willing to kill"

I will not put my hand in front of the muzzle wile racking the slide.

What? You don’t put your hand in front of the muzzle with forward cocking serrations.

I've owned all 6 generations of Glock 9mm pistols (there was a Gen2.5) and put over 20k rounds through them in the last 8-10 years. Much of that time I spent chasing accuracy by testing loads, tuning triggers, fitting aftermarket barrels, etc.

Ammunition has a huge effect on accuracy in Glocks, so the first thing I'd do is test at least a dozen loads for accuracy. Your pistol will prefer some over others, and finding the right one can cut groups in half. Also, bear in mind that most of them will shift POI (elevation AND windage) when you change loads.

Accuracy has definitely improved since the Gen1-3 guns, and Gen3 guns made since about 2016 are more accurate than Gen3 guns made before then. (Issues with zero and sights in these guns will be more obvious since groups are smaller.) The Gen4 and Gen5 guns that I've messed with has been significantly more accurate than earlier generations, although the late Gen3 guns are close. The Gen5 guns have better triggers, which make them easier to shoot well, and are less prone to throw brass into your face like some of the early Gen4 guns. Gen5 guns also have ambidextrous slide stops, which are nice but can cause holster issues.

Overall, the Gen4 and Gen5 guns I’ve tested are on par with earlier generation guns that have been properly fitted with good aftermarket barrels and tuned triggers, or an HK VP9 or P30. It should be no problem to find a combination that will group into 5" at 50 yards (or a bit better) and stay on an IDPA/IPSC target at 100 yards if you do your part.

Gen5 guns are out there at good prices if you're patient. I'd take one of them over an earlier generation any day.

Finally, your zero will wander a bit until you’ve fired a few hundred rounds through your Glock. You definitely have to upgrade your sights, but I would NOT do that I’ve shot a few hundred rounds and the zero has settled down. Then you’ll have a good idea of its actual POI and you can get the right sights for your pistol.

Hope this helps.

If I was starting over, I'd get either a Gen 5 19 or a Glock 45, which is a Gen 5 model 17 lower and a Gen 5 model 19 upper.

That said, my Gen 3 model 19s have thousands and thousands of rounds through them and are still running strong.

Same here. I didn't care for the trigger on a new G34 Gen 4, so I had it modified so that it feels about the same as my stock G19 Gen 3. I'm not into the technical details or DIY on handguns, so I just had my gunsmith take care of it.
