Good point......we all know American vehicles never rust.

Another factor would be that he lives in FL where they salt the roads 365 days a year.

Yep......stay away from those Toyota's.

Hey, sorry if I hurt your feelings but they rusted extremely fast up here. Other trucks of the same vintage are still workable, rebuildable. But I would have to go outside of the area or find one that has been brought into my area and stored in a shed, kept off the snow.

It's a real thing, in the same exposures as other trucks in my area, they disintegrated.

Something clever here.

ol' mike.

Best bangs for the buck can usually be found in the late 90's era of 4Runner's with the 3.4. If the timing belt and water pump (typically done at the same) have been replaced then that thing is ready for another 200K. If it hasn't been done, any good Toyota shop should be able to knock it out fairly cheap.

Have them check ball joints, tie rods and CV joints while it's in there.

If you're fortunate enough to find certain models within this timeframe they may have an electronic locker as well. I know the Limited's did but some versions of the SR5 may have also.

If I was going to pull around the west a lot I'd get something built for pulling. i.e. Dodge or Ford diesels.

Practical truck? Honda Ridgeline. Not super popular so you can’t get a pretty nice one ... as in not abused for under 10k and still have modern comforts and some technology.
I put a 2” lift and some decent ATs and it was the most practical and comfortable truck I’ve had.
Independent 4 corner suspension ate up the gravel washboard roads. Full time all wheel drive, trunk in the bed was awesome to keep things locked up in.
Only for men who are comfortable with them selves and don’t have to prove anything.
Went off roadiing with my buddy and his Jeep. Kept up 90% of the time. He eventually sold the Jeep and got the Ridgeline

All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

Yes, certain years of Tacoma's had recalled frames that were disintegrating at alarming rates. And of course the old pre-Tacoma's are known for their bodies rusting very quickly. 80's era Toyota beds had seams that were folded like two pieces of aluminum foil. Salt gets in that seam and eats away very, very quickly. In the midwest you could see it in as little as one year.

Obviously if you find a vehicle out west or most of the south it's not an issue. But anything in the midwest or NE is gonna be pretty ate up.

Including 20 years of at least a couple road trips of over 1,000 miles each way through hilly/mountainous country, often towing a boat or trailer.

These are ubiquitous vehicles, go anywhere, do anything, roomy, comfortable. Parts and consumables available anywhere. Anyone with a few punches in their man-card can do most of the basic work needed to keep them running. (Mine is very low maintenance, for example).

Something decent can be found easily in the $2,500- 4,000 price range.

Good luck in your search, and please post how you finally rolled on your decision!

^^^^^^^^^ This! And get yourself an econobox for a daily driver. Makes no sense wearing out your hunting rig going to work every day. Mine stays parked unless I am pulling a trailer or hauling a lot of people/gear.

I don't want to jinx it but my 2002, 4wd, 5.3 Tahoe. Other than not an economical daily driver, 13/14 mpg in town, it has met the rest of your criteria. I've had it since it was new and so far the only big repair was replacing the fuel pump.

Mid to late 80,s early 90,s toyota.
Fugging unicorn around here.
Unobtaium basically.
I just picked up a nice solid tar baby 04 colorado.
If I coulda found solid Toyota at a reasonable price.
I would be driving one right now.
I looked for almost 3 weeks around here.
Seen alot of expensive junk
Seen a few solid used trucks.
Something solid that dont look like a EPA oil spill disaster site engine wise and running train wise.
Are fugging unicorns around here.

This is literally the most sought after of all stock Toyota 4X4's so I don't know that I'd go that route.

Bought one in April for $800.

Fella I bought her from said "She has had a bit of a hard life".

I said "She ain't seen nothing yet."

Solid axle Toyota pickups are unicorns most everywhere. They are sought after very hard.

You could spend the better part of three years finding a decent '85, EFI, with 5 speed.

LMFAO!
Pretty typical answer probably by someone who’s never used one.
Like I said, for guys who got nothing to prove.

My buddy in Havre had one. He hated it. So did I.

To each his own.
