The Antifa (basically, Bolsheviks) of post WWI Germany identified anyone who wished to preserve the traditional order (i.e., anyone who resisted Marxist revolution) as fascists, and ruled the streets with mob violence in order to force a Marxist revolution. The Brown Shirts eventually formed as a means of countering them in the streets, since the police would stand around and do nothing to stop Antifa violence and destruction.
