I can see at least one good reason for putting a G&H side-mount on a rifle chambered in 375 H&H, to get the scope off the rifle so that the shooter could use the open sights for dangerous game in tight cover. The G&H side-mount was probably the best available option back in that era.

Since Mannlicher-Schoenauers have a split receiver bridge, scope mounts needed to be a side-mount or a hybrid 1-piece. Again, the G&H side-mount might have been one of the better available options, even if it required non-factory holes to be d&t.
