So I was ready to build another 6mm-06 for an upcoming antelope hunt but lately have been wondering if I shouldn't just go with the plain old 25-06. I have dies, brass and bullets for both, and I don't "need" either, just want one. Antelope up here is a very very rare draw so 95% of the time it would be used for coyotes/wolves, and whitetails.

So what would you build? (Between these two only)

More high BC bullets available for 6mm. Factory ammo available for 25/06. The 131gr Blackjack makes a properly twisted 25/06 pretty interesting though.., If being able to buy factory ammo is important, the 25/06 is your only play between the choices you mentioned. If going 25/06 be sure to get it twisted correctly for the 131gr Blackjack. Im sure there will be more high BC .25 bullets eventually. If a variety of high BC bullets right now is important, 6mm is it.

Whichever I had more components for. The 6mm has a much wider range of longer range bullets but inside 600 yards or so not that big an advantage. A 1-7 25-06 would be in the running for any range you are competent to shoot at. Only with the specialty bullets will a 25 out range a 6mm. so I would lean more towards the six. If you want easy and convenience then no question the 25-06. I kicked both around and solved the dilemma by building a 25-06 and a 6mm AI. I am pleased with both and don't feel like I am lacking much by not doing a 6mm-06. The VLD type bullets from 105 to 115 seem to settle in around 3200 +/- 50 fps and not sure if there is a higher velocity sweet spot or not that the 06 could do. So not much help from me.

For the use you described, and staying with your two options, 25/06.
I had the same dilemma a few years back.
Ended up buying a Rem 700 in 270, had the barrel replaced with a 6mm barrel (26”) and chambered in 240 weatherby. It’s a coyote killer and I’ve killed a few antelope with it,

I agree that bullets matter more than headstands.

But I’m not more impressed with hunting bullets for the 6mm than I am with the 25. Neither really set the world on fire. Combined with factory vs wildcat brass I would give the nod to the 25-06. Doesn’t hurt that I have a ridiculously accurate 25-06. I would pick one of the 110 Accubond, 110 ELDX, 115 Ballistic Tip, 100 Scirocco II, maybe 100 TTSX.

If you open the options to 6.5mm or 7mm bullets, that would probably change my opinion.

“My” 6-06 is a sporter weight 6 BR. Even more accurate than the 25-06. 8-twist barrel so can shoot near any 6mm bullet.

I didn’t say I don’t like 6mm bullets. I said I don’t like 6mm hunting bullets any more than 25 cal hunting bullets. Some pretty darn good 95 to 115 grain target bullets in 6mm.

Make your 6-06 with a fast twist bbl and longer shank so that you can rechamber it to another cartridge if desired.

Is that on that stainless 270 you tore down?

Even though I’m considering putting my Fieldcraft 25-06 up for sale to fund a project rifle for my son, I’d still vote 25-06, just because if you ever need to, you can find ammo on the shelf. I think if you’re not going to go full custom, the 9” twisted Barrett is the way to go, and you have a great rifle to boot.

To the OP, if you’re interested in a nearly new 25-06 Fieldcraft, shoot me a pm.

It will be the same as the last one, but it will indeed get a faster twist this go around.
And yep to the 270. I thought the 270 pipe would tempt a guy like you - I will make you a better deal on it.... Lol

25 cals are about as popular as a Clinton supporters these days. Like someone said though, inside 600 yards there is not much difference between a 105 vld and a 25-06 shooting a 115 vld. I’d get another 6-06 if it was my money.
