Dirtfarmer, That is truly a handsome 39, Love it. Nice job on the checkering. I just picked up my first Model 39M at auction this weekend. Got it for $450. Excellent condition. Gonna put a Skinner peep on it, keep it simple for a walking around gun.

Thanks, Kota.

I should have put more of an angle on the forearm pattern, too close to 90*. The grip pattern has a better groove angle.

But, I was young... blush

Dirt farmer I would be proud as heck to own that 39 of yours.. yes it is a tad different but done in a very appealing way (to me at least)
If you decide to rid yourself of it please extend an offer to me.

Thanks, but it’s a keeper.

My son is a gun buff, knows his stuff. So it should be safe for another generation.

Winchester 70: I have a "22 Rifle with a barrel 27 1/4" long" - it is one of the most accurate and deadly (on small game and Varmints!) Rifles I have ever seen or owned (and I have owned a couple hundred of them!)!
The appeal of a barrel "longer than 24" is the increased stability when aiming (especially afield!) - also known as accuracy.
The mass (length) of that barrel adds to the accuracy - I am certain.
Witness also the very accurate and popular longer barreled Winchester Model 52's (with 28" barrels!) and Remington Model 37 Targets (with 28" barrels) etc.
I do know this - if you are a small Ground Squirrel you DO NOT want to experience ME aiming my loaded Remington 40X rimfire at you!
My Remington 40X with heavy 27 1/4" barrel is exceptionally accurate.
My 27 1/4" barreled Remington 40X produces accuracy that a 20" barreled Marlin Mountie could never even hope to achieve.
Yeah there are benefits and attributes that "appeal" to some (many) of us with the longer than 24" barreled 22 Rifles.

IMO, accuracy should be equivalent, short vs longer barrel, given no other variables.

It's in the eye of the beholder. Some may be able to shoot the longer, slightly heavier barrel better.

Some bench rest guns have shorter barrels.

How about my 29" CZ 2500 .22LR? It's accurate, but won't out shoot my Cooper with shorter tube... It'll run with my Marlin 39 pretty well.

BTW, that very long barrel is pretty quiet as one would think.

VarmintGuy: That's great. The squirrels I shoot can't tell the difference and I prefer Marlin 39's with 16 and 20 inch barrels. To each their own.

Long barrels mean long sight radius' maybe some steadiness when shooting free hand. Scope it bench it, the length becomes irrelevant.

But as originally intended, barrel length has relevance...... Big time!

Handiness is another animal. Pick your game.

Gotta be careful, with a barrel that long you could have someone's eye out.

I wonder why they did that? - long tapered barrel

That gun is a mystery. I don’t know the answer.

I traded for it. As noted, it is quieter than most.

I pulled the gun in half to expose the action parts and did a little cleaning as well as lubricating. A couple of times while shooting, shells have hung up in the receiver ring and not fed to the lifter. Last night I pulled the mag tube and used a 22 cleaning rod and patched jag to clean the tube and rec ring part hope fully this will settle those issues. Maybe it is a brand thing too, I hope not as I enjoy shooting whatever is on sale for cheap fun. Don't need to shoot match ammo on a swinger /dinger target. Blasting ammo if you will. I think I will look for a receiver sight for the gun also. MB

Thanks Mike, that what you have on yours? I was thinking old style like a Lyman or Redfield that would utilize the 2 close drilled and tapped holes on the left rec wall. MB

Yeah, mine came with a Skinner (first skinner for me). It uses the scope mounting holes on top. Pretty slick setup, seems "cleaner" than a side mount.

Currently in production, so probably easier to get ahold of than an old redfield or lyman.

Interesting - quieter, easier accuracy with open sights, and good for poking rattlesnakes to check that they are dead after you shot them:

Someone's going to have to chrono this.
