My old man has an ithaca sxs that was his dad’s first shotgun and is wanting to get it redone. It’s been heavily used and has some rust spots that I’m sure will leave a little bit of pitting. Is there a way to make it look new again or will the pits always be there?

Pits on the barrel(s)? A prudent gunner would have the barrel wall thickness measured under them if they're anything more than mere surface rust, especially if back toward or over the chamber area.

As for refinishing, I'll vote to leave a family heirloom as it is- a lot of family history is written in those scars and dents and worn finish.

Just clean up with some Flitz metal polish or if bad use 0000 Bronze wool. On the stock I would just clean it with Murphy's oil soap and give it a rub down of linseed oil after it has dried a couple of days. Use an old tooth brush lightly on the checkering and use Artist or Organic food store Linseed Oil not the junk from the hardware store.

This after you have verified the integrity of the barrel. If you still want to refinish it keep in mind your erasing the history and probably several hundred off the value of it.

Also, be very aware of the model/age of this gun. If you are going to shoot it, a good rule of thumb is: if its SN is under 425000 you should only use low pressure loads.. and please don't re-finish it...It's taken its whole life building that patina/character..A good light cleaning of the crud is all it needs to look pretty again. Its an Heirloom that should be cherished.

I’d just wipe it down.

This was my father's. Ithaca. Mfgr was about1936.The stock was broken thru the neck when I inherited it. So I restocked it.Barrels are pristine. Not much bluing left on the action.

Nice NID. Much better candidate for this than the earlier models, IMO.
