Scientists Are Making Human-Monkey Hybrids in China

In a controversial first, a team of researchers have been creating embryos that are part human and part monkey, reports the Spanish daily El Pais. According to the newspaper, the Spanish-born biologist Juan Carlos Izpisua Belmonte, who operates a lab at the Salk Institute in California, has been working with monkey researchers in China to perform the disturbing research. Their objective is to create "human-animal chimeras," in this case monkey embryos to which human cells are added. The idea behind the research is to fashion animals that possess organs, like a kidney or liver, made up entirely of human cells. So they take a monkey fetus and graft a few human cells onto it. Then after birth they harvest a human heart, or lungs, or kidney, or liver from the monkey which is an identical DNA match for the human recipient. Zero chance of rejection, zero need for prohibitively expensive anti-rejection drugs.

There is nothing but good to come from such a program. Monkeys are probably a better match for such research than are pigs. There have been reports of such research with swine for years.

But the headline is very misleading. The author does not know the difference between hybrid and chimera and is using the terms as if they were synonyms.

Slashdot isn't exactly a scientific journal, just a news blog for computer nerds. Makes for a rather startling headline though.

Once again, they are not creating hybrids, They are only using the embryonic monkeys as a host on which to grow human organs. The sacrificial monkey is still pure monkey.
