IMO,the hand loading section is better at SW than Cabelas in El Paso. SW has a larger selection of dies, bullets, shot, wads, powders, primer and brass. Cabelas has more clothes, scopes, binos along with new and used firearms. The prices seem to be a little higher at Cabelas than SW. Also,I think SW has a better selection of centerfire factory ammo, especially the smaller Weatherby cartridges and the standard cartridges as well.

I was at my first Cabela's a couple weeks ago.
It was pretty cool. They had a big assed fish tank and a Santa Claus. Did they sell you a Timeshare condo?? 😄

Dryfly, I was pissed when they closed the Sportsman's Warehouse there in Cruces! No way would I drive into El Paso for Cabela's. The SW in Cruces blows the Cabelas away! As was stated already, Cabelas has better selection of clothing, but that's about it. I've bought several guns from SW already. They never had a problem letting me finger fugg the guns to my heart's content. When I bought my Glock 42 this last time, they let me put it in my pocket and walk around a bit with it to see how it would fit in my cargo pants. They then went and got a couple different holsters for me to try out and wear with the pistol. They have an entire fly fishing section that spans three or four rows. Handloading equipment and ammo selection is great, etc. Like I said, the only reason I took the ride to Crapela's is because I recently retired and was bored. I won't make that mistake again...

haha! bought some Mendel hunting boots there years ago that were the worst thing that ever touched my feet! In a pinch I bought a pair of 10x50 Cabela HD bins for $219 that blow away every other $500 glass I've looked through. But in general the place is way over priced. You wanta hit the sales??? Take about $1500 with ya and just get it over with. Years ago I scored the best deal on wool pants on the planet in the bargain basement. It isn't going anywhere anytime soon. A buddy has a set of those binos. The hinge is loose and they need to be repaired. Paid full price, warranty says lifetime. Cabelas will not warranty their own branded stuff. Not good.

That big SW there they closed when the owner went through his infidelity divorce was very nice. I never went in there that I didn't wonder at their business model though... All SW stores were stocked with the exact same thing. That may work is all areas had the same animals and fish... But to have 3 aisles of huge saltwater tackle, baits, rods & reels, and lures is pretty wasteful and non essential in a store that's a thousand miles from any coast.

I agree, but since I am somewhat of a fish out of water down here myself, I'm not complaining. I've been going in there since I moved here and never set foot in the fly fishing section up until a few days ago because I didn't even know they had one - I'm not kidding. I never even dreamed they would down here. It's all the way in the back corner of the store hidden from sight. If you don't physically walk into the area you won't know it's there, but it's pretty well stocked. They dont have everything a fly shop might have, but they do have a lot. Way more than I would have hoped for in this area so I'm happy...

Cabelas is definitely circling the drain.
Scheels and Sportsman's blows them out of the water. Bass Pro as well.

It was pretty cool. They had a big assed fish tank and a Santa Claus. The first Cabelas store in downtown Sidney NE was far cooler than any of the showcase stores they have had for the past 15 years. The product line was only gun/shooting and hunting related stuff, but all of it was quality stuff.
It's official. I missed the selfie deadline so I'm Maser's sock puppet because rene and the Polish half of the fubar twins have decided that I am.

Just a little rant cause why not?
So I took the drive down to the Cabelas in El Paso today knowing it probably wouldn't be worth my time but what the hell, I was bored so I did it any way. A friend told me they had a fly tying section and I've been looking for an ITW holster for my HK P30SK.
As soon as I went inside I made my way over to the fishing section. The guy in that department saw me coming and immediately asked if I needed help. I asked him if he had a fly tying section and he enthusiastically answered "Yes! Right this way." Now that kind of took me by surprise because I really didn't expect them to have one, but my surprise was short lived. Apparently his idea of a "section" was a small rack that was mostly empty with about five or six items hanging from it. When I looked at him with what must have been a "WTF?" expression on my face, he sheepishly said, " Yeah, I'm kind of low on stock at the moment."
So with that bust in mind, I headed over to the guns department. I found an in the waist tuckable holster marked for Springfield XD compact. I have a holster that I can fit both my XD and P30 in so I went over to the gun counter where they had a P30SK in order to ask if I could try it in the holster to see how it would fit. The girl behind the counter took the holster from me and then took out the pistol and put it half way in but had to stop because of the gun lock. She then looked at me and said "It looks like it would fit but I Can't take off the gun lock here. I'd have to go in the back to do it." I asked if I could go back there with her so I could try for myself and she said no, but that I could watch her through a window. It was about then that I thought about asking if she wanted to try on a pair of shoes for me too, but then thought the better of it and just said " That's ok, thanks..." and walked away.
About the only thing I've found Cabelas useful for lately has been clothing when it's on sale. Otherwise it's just high priced bullshit and the people who work there don't know shyte from shinola. It's kind of like the Home Depot of sporting goods... I was actually surprised at the Bass Pro fly fishing section in Aurora Colorado. I went in killing time while my wife was recovering from surgery at Anschutz Cancer Center. This was before the Cabelas buy out. Being in the Denver area is real close to a lot of fly fishing though. Cabelas in Sidney Nebraska is a thing of the past compared to past years.

There is a Cabela's 12 miles from my cabin and it is a good place to go when the weather is bad or in the evenings. I am a savvy shopper and only buy what makes sense. I have some neighbors who work in the adjacent distribution center so I hate to seem them close the doors.

Their new policy on bulky trigger locks on every gun in the store (including the gun library) and their refusal to remove them so that one may feel true balance is asinine. Was looking at a 28g sxs and asked kindly if it could be removed ... “nope, can’t do that, no exceptions.” GMAFB, and I can’t even short the company anymore.

Was just in the Cabelas in Rapid City. All Red Head, Under Armour, and Columbia overpriced clothing. Turning into a giant fudge, and Tee shirt store. Runnings is a much better option.

First and last time in a Cabela's (Gainesille). I went in with a disassembled rifle (in a cardboard shipping box) to see how it would fit, folded, into various cases. Timmy insisted that he had to 1. Remove the rifle from the box himself 2. Assemble the rifle 3. Escort me around the store, holding the rifle up like he's in the 3rd Infantry, asking me annoying questions the entire time. After pestering me about buying a case, he literally says 'so which case are you going to buy?' My answer: Gimme my rifle, Timmy, I'm out. My only advice to Cabela's: Quit hiring children to handle and sell firearms- surely there are laws in place to prevent that.
I predict a Chapter 11 in your very near future.

Cabelas has turned into a glorified department store. The one here in Anchorage took a real nosedive after the BP buyout. I much prefer Sportmans Warehouse.

I saw Cabela's imploding like Herter's did, when they kept opening store after store in places I didn't think they would have a decent customer base.
