Dang, there aren't many other rifles I would covet more than that one.. Something about a 270 Win FW SG that would find it in my hands a bunch.

[quote=nyrifleman]Unsold at $4500

Reserve was probably $4501.00

I played, but wasn’t going over 4500.00.
Wouldn’t spend more than that in this market.
Yet, knowing myself, if he would have put 5k on it
BIN, I might have jumped!
Something tells me he was looking more in the line of
5500.00....

Now that I don't understand. You basically said "name your price", and he wouldn't do it. Not to say you would have been obligated, but you might have been a buyer at the number he threw out. How could he ignore that? (Rhetorical question.)
If you weren't the gentleman I suspect you are, the comeback would be "Well, gee, mister, do you want to sell the gun or not?"
Am I missing something in the fine points of buying a rifle? (Not rhetorical, serious question.)
Maybe he was waiting for you to make an offer?

My sense is that the reserve was substantially more than $5500.00.

Asked the seller again if he had a buy now price.

Response follows;

My reserve was quite a bit higher. It’s worth more to me to hang on to it. Appreciate your interest.

Doc - if I were him I'd throw a number out there. You never know.

At those prices you are in the realm of being able to buy a nice Al Biesen rifle. I like my pre 64s that are factory, but I would rather have a 2nd Biesen rifle than pay that much for a factory supergrade.

My guess is he had a reserve on it that was "unrealistic plus some more." The plan was not to sell the rifle, but to figure out what the rifle was worth in today's market.
If I had such a rifle, really cared to sell it, and had a willing buyer in front of me, I'd name a price. Perhaps I'd invite the buyer to make an offer on the off chance he was terribly uninformed and would offer me even more that what I had in mind. But once you are willing to sell, it really doesn't matter who first mentions a number to get the ball rolling.
IMO, that gun was never really for sale.

My question is, when was the last time a SG FW sold, in roughly comparable condition, and what did it go for? I think Rule's book lists 930 made.

Exactly where I came down as well.

I was able to find two comps in 270, both auctions. One was a lot; one was catch your breath a lot (that example was near nib.) Both were north of the last bid on this one; one by a factor.

Any reason you are not giving us the amounts?

Did some google searches but didn’t bookmark them and didn’t write the numbers down. I’ll try to find them again. Was going off memory from when I did them when the gun was listed and I didn’t want to post erroneous information.

I had the opportunity three years ago to purchase a legitimate SG FW in comparable condition as this one for 5500 out of Mass. I wanted two target rifles instead from the gentleman and passed. I regret it now. If I wanted 7 or 8K or more for it ,I wouldn’t waste my time with GB, just put your number on Gun International and be done with it.

The last SG FWT I saw personally was sold about 3 years ago. Was NIB with everything in 308. Went for 10 grand.

Thanks for the reply, for not posting information you aren't sure of, and for the link you provided.
