Very nice combo! ......... A lot of those old 700 222s got torn down for the action or rechambered to 223.

Used gun availability seems "streaky" to me with no particular rhyme or reason for why you have to look long and hard for some stuff and others are available almost everywhere.

IIRC, Rapid City Cabelas has one of those 700 Varmint BLD's in 22-250 (maybe 223?). If it's not Rapid then it's Mitchell SD Cabelas.

I shot out a barrel on a 70's BDL Varmint and sold it. Picked up a real nice used newer one in 223 6 months later ,a few years a go I replaced the original stock with a laminated thumbhole model off a ss fluted one a friend had. One month a go I stumbled on to a heavy ss fluted 223 take off barrel for the VS for $40 ,new never shot. So if I live long enuf to wear out the original blued one I've got a replacement. Yeah I like them too.

Magnum Bob: That would be a double cool Varmint Rifle (the 700 BDL Varmint in 223 with the later factory thumbhole stock)!
I have a couple Remington 700 Varmints (the later versions) with the factory thumbhole stock and I like them VERY much!
They fit me to a "T" both at the range and in the Colony Varmint fields.

As an aside I shot my latest Remington 700 BDL Varmint in 22-250 Remington for the first time today.
It only has a period correct Weaver 3x9 variable "Micro-Trac" scope on it and I wish profoundly that it had more scope power and I may correct that soon.
Anyway the wind STOPPED today - I mean it was dead calm, so I loaded up my latest 22-250 and some left-over Remington factory ammo I wanted to shoot up, and headed to my friends private range. Mostly just to function test and verify near sight-in.
Only had to adjust the point of impact a couple inches windage wise - and wouldn't you know it my aging eyes mistook the "feathers" on Weavers windage "direction arrow" for the "point" of the direction arrow. Wasted a few shots there as I initially moved the point of impact the exact wrong way!
Had my glasses right there - why didn't I use them.
"Doubled back" on my adjustment and had four rounds of the factory ammo left for a group.
The last four shots with that 3x9 scope made a slightly vertically linear grouping of only .372" there at 100 yards!
I was astounded with that - factory ammo, low magnification, aging eyes and a not so "clean" trigger pull and that old timey 22-250 shot that well!
Another keeper for sure.
I think the trigger needs a "de-gumming clean-out"?
A word to the wise or to the newbies to Varmint shooting - these 1960's through 1980's Remington 700 BDL Varmint's, almost universally, shoot VERY well - I don't know why.

Horse1: Thanks for the tip - I am full up on BDL 22-250's but would love one in 223 Remington.
Maybe I will give them a call tomorrow - headed out to dinner here in a few minutes.

Horse1: Dang it. The VarmintWife and I stayed in Rapid City, South Dakota for two nights (three days) just a couple months ago. We toured all the monuments and parks in South Dakota and eastern Wyoming.
I did not know there was a "Cabela's" there in Rapid City!
Thanks again for the tip i will get a call off tomorrow.

Super Cub: I just love my early 700 BDL Varmint in 222 Remington - blasphemy it would be to "tear it down"!
I have owned two others of these, in 222, and "foolishly" sold them for a pittance of profit before I knew they were being discontinued (one of the most foolish and short sided decisions the boys at "Big Green" have ever made - and they have made a LOT of them!).
What do you surmise the folks were making them into when they tore them down 6x47's? 221 Remington Fireballs? 223 Remington Ackley Improved's?

I went in the Cabelas in Rapid City about a month ago. The gun library didn’t have a whole lot. The many life size mounts were breath taking. We went all over the area around Mt Rushmore.

Rechambering is/was apparently a good way to stretch out the usable life of a barrel, according to a piece I read a while back. The writer cited a pal who put about 12,000 rounds through his .222, rechambered to clean up the throat, and soldiered on as before. Should appeal to the frugal sort, maybe even me.

What fresh Hell is this?
