I’ve been wanting a .250 savage for sometime. Finally got my hands on a 700 classic in the chambering. It’s shooting very well with 4320 and 100g ballistic tips. Not likely I’ll change this combination as I see it doing everything I need the cartridge to do.

I am however losing my mind waiting for deer season and/or a coyote to try it out on. Does anyone care to share their .250savage hunt pics, rifle pics, loads, etc to get me through.

Mine is somewhat of a parts bin project that ended up being a rifle I really enjoy.

Best load so far is the 87 hornady sp right at 2900 fps with 36.0 grains of RL15. 100 grain ballistic tips shot almost as well with 35.0 grains of RL15 and were running just under 2800 fps.

I'm a huge fan of the 80ttsx in .257. I'm getting right at 3600fps w/ RL15 in my Kampfeld 250ai but you should be able to get around 3200+fps with standard 250. It is whitetail medicine... hits em like lightning.

What's the charge weight?

Have you tried H4895? Nosler's top charge of 35 grains works very well for me.

35g even of 4320 gave me just a touch under 3/4 at 100. Didn’t bother trying anything else. Book puts it at 2788 from
a 22” pipe. I suspect I’m a touch higher with my 24”

I am shooting the 80Gr TTSX's in my 250 Savage Model 16. Can't remember the charge weight or powder since I loaded a bunch up several years back. Gun is a tack driver and the three deer I shot with it died like being hit by lightning including one rather large buck.

I used some unheadstamped "Federal" brass that I've had for 20yrs. It is a nice pleasant rifle to hunt with.

Mines a parts basket too. Turkish Mauser with a 700 Classic barrel fitted to it and a chunk of wood that could be trimmed down by about half. Gave it to dad and told him to see what it could do. Multiple bullets, powders, primers. He said he couldn't shoot a bad group with it. I need to change the safety to a more scope friendly choice and get after the stock with a rasp. Right now its just hanging out in one of his safes, where its sat for several years.

250 Savage is a great cartridge case period, i have kinda wondered was the 6.5 Creedmoor case designed with or close to a 250 Savage case with the only intentions to use a different name and make more money ? line both type cases up and you can see both are very similar in size and shape. i just built a 25 Creedmoor only reason was cartridge cases are easier to get and Lapua makes the Creedmoor case too,but i did consider building the 250 Savage 1st. i really hate how gun manufactures have quit chambering some great old cartridge cases like the 250 Savage ,275 Roberts and many others .

The 35 grains of H4895 load with the 100 grain Ballistic Tip produces about 2950 out of my 700 Classic. Small groups too.

77 hawkeye RSI

in .250 sav. the crassic is easily the most accurate, bone stock, with the savage right behind it. the RSI shoots well enough and its uniquely sexy. the 700 and the 16 are both cream puffs to shoot from the bench. its easy to have a tremendous amount of confidence in your shots in the field when recoil and blast are so low. the 18.5” RSI is a little blasty.

Turned down a full stock M77 back when I was young, dumber, and poor. It's been eating at me every since. Then the family got me a M99R 250 for my 50th birthday, made in 1953 same as me. I've taken several deer with the 87 Speer Hot Core and a couple with the 100 Hot Core in that rifle. These days I've settled on Big Game with the Hot Core and RL-15 with the 87 TNT, they shoot to the same point of aim in this rifle, so I can interchange depending on what I'm hunting.
A few years ago Cheesy ran across a Ruger M77 Tang Safe 250 with a Timney trigger consigned at a local gun shop. I ended up buying it and have been real happy with it. The earlier mentioned 35-H4895 load with the 100 Speer Hot Core did a number on a large buck here on my place last fall. A few days later the M99 and the 87 Hot Core dropped a doe. Freezer was full.

My absolute favorite rifle cartridge (have 12 different rifles in that chambering) and have used it on a truckload of whitetails, black bear, pronghorn antelope and a cow elk. My go to load is 38.5-38.7 grains of WW760 behind the old Nosler Solid Base Boattails. Only ever had one issue with that load and that was on a cow elk and never really have determined what happened other than I’m reasonably certain I hit her where I was aiming (slightly behind the shoulder) but never did find her?? Did spend the day looking for her and may have found her if conditions would have been more favorable (she was with 60-80 other elk and at the shot they all went in different directions, all were out of my sight and the tracking conditions were poor (very dry)).

I had and stupidly sold two different 700 Classics. I shot 39-40 grs of WW760 or H414 with a 100 gr. Nosler Solid Base and was getting 2950-2980 FPS. Very accurate and deadly on whitetails and coyotes. Just an all around super little cartridge and easy to load for. I did use some IMR4320 as well but don't remember the load.

I want a 99 in 250 Savage!
