Found a diagram of model 40/45, and it showed a groove cut in the bottom of the barrel.

Just a diagram, so dunno.

I have a Super Sporter pulled apart and the bottom of the barrel isn’t cut for a dovetail. I think savage used the same basic barrel contour for the 99, 20/26 and 40/45.

What if it came from a barrel band gun? Barrel length still wrong but wouldn't that explain the lack of the lug for forearm screw?

The barrel band guns had a groove cut in the bottom of the barrel for the cross screw.
