Not so long ago the trend was light weight hunting rifles with compact scopes which I liked. Now it seems to be 10lbs plus with giant high powered scopes.

Swampman700, There is a difference between “sniping” and hunting! Many today don’t hunt....if they did, they would be carrying different rifles! There’s nothing wrong with “sniping”....though it is vastly different than putting in several miles “hunting”! Another thing that many fail to consider.....light rifles can be very accurate at long ranges, though rarely consistent for firing many rounds in fast succession! If shooting “many” rounds in fast succession is required......the shooter probably shouldn’t be shooting long range! memtb

Just depends on the application. Have you looked in your wife's closet lately at the number of shoes she has? Sometimes you need a rifle that you can carry long distance and is handy, sometimes weight is not a consideration. Sometimes you need to make longer shots and I am not talking about sniping. Many hunters tend to over emphasize magnification though.
I am continually astounded at how quickly people make up their minds on little evidence or none at all. Jack O'Connor

If you had told me, even 10 years ago that not only would I be owning, much less toting rifles with iron sights and thin wispy barrels, I'd have told ya' you wuz' nuts. ya! GWB

I’ve always liked rifles between 7.5-9 lbs all up with a variable scope. Iron sights and qd rings being a must...for both backup and the times iron sights make more sense. I’m a generalist...I hunt lots of different things in lots of different places.
Seems like hunters have been using setups like this for a long time...in style or not.
Some folks ARE mountain hunters...some ARE snipers.
In general though most that use ultra lite guns wish they were mountain hunters and those with 10lb heavy barreled target guns are living out tactical fantasies.
Trends change quickly with posers

11 lbs as is in the picture. .460 Weatherby and defunct jackrabbit. Not every "heavy" rifle has a big scope on it.

Fellas starting eating their Wheaties to carry rifles, their farts were so bad that animals could smell them from longer distances and now everyone has to be a sniper to hunt.

That pendulum has swung a few times. Late 80's through mid-90's Rem had their Mountain Rifle. ULA was born, then sold, then the Colt Light Rifle was sold all over. Middle-late 90's big shift to Remington Sendero, Weatherby Acu-Mark, Winchester Laredo, Sako TRG, etc. Next, along comes Kimber Tikka T3 Lite, more recently Barrett. Keep the pendulum swinging.

Hunting, Sniping call it what you want to. What do you care as long as it is by legal means? At what point is the magic distance the separation between hunting and sniping? Should we all just sell off our guns and compound bows, and stick to traditional archery? What if one becomes really proficient with a trad bow and shoots say 50 yards, does that become sniping?
I say know your personal limits with whatever tool you decide to use. As long as it is legal it is fine with me.

I have no idea how much mine weigh. I hunt with them, I don’t weigh them.

I’ve always preferred the varmint special, sendero type of rifles. They just feel right.
