Been many moons since I was into real round balls, patches and true black powder. I used to use Bore Butter for lube and hot soapy water. Are there better ways available now?

Water for cleaning and spit for patches is what I use the most. When Im out hunting I’ll use something mixed with a little beeswax to stiffen it just a tad. It may be sweet oil, bear oil, or sheep tallow.

Thanks...I was hoping you’d share. Care to share more about the beeswax and bear oil? I have access to all the bear fat I would ever need. How do I make the oil?

Thanks,
Erich

Kaywoodie, did you ever use deer fat? Another poster said sheep fat is best. I was ready to go get some Crisco without salt.

Just render it down in a big pan in your oven. Low heat. Never used any deer tallow as its hard to find any fat on deer here. I just inherited a big jar of mutton tallow.

I just mix beeswax enough to stiffen it up a tad

Thanks. Does it have to be kept cold after you render it to prevent spoilage?

Deerhunter5555 - whatever you decide to use for lube and cleaning, I can definitely recommend Bore Butter when you're done. Whether its for a day or a year, Bore Butter has kept my bores safe and I never skip it when I'm done.
The only rifles I've ever had rust up were 1 before I became a Bore Butter man, and one that's been hunted (& reloaded) in rain and snow. And that one still shoots like a champ, it just doesnt have a mirror bore.
I know its "modern" stuff but it's good stuff. And it smells nice. Now if I can just get the girlfriend to dab on just a touch before we go out.... Perfect. ha ha!

Northern deer fat shouldn’t be an issue. Down here in Texas or the south the kidney fat should do
Just fine. That is the one sure place to alway find fat to render down on any animal. Deer fat should work just fine mix it in half with beeswax. You can place in a large pan in the oven as Kaywoodie stated or go to the dollar store and get a cheep metal cooking pot and do a double boil. When I use the Wife’s dishes she tends to get upset. Ditch the bore butter. Read this article.
