Great write up and pictures. Really enjoyed it.
How much can each goat pack?

I am continually astounded at how quickly people make up their minds on little evidence or none at all.

My dad killed a big Billy when I was wee. It was quite an adventure for him too. He and my uncle spent much time at the bars in Salmon, ID, plying locals with alcohol until the two of them got enough info that they knew where Dad needed to hunt. It was a brutal experience that he never wanted to recount later, but he was successful, came out alive, and never did much hunting after that.

I get the sentiment but I wanna try again

Just got back from a goat hunt here, not for the weak-hearted.

Was that in Nevada and the goat in your avatar?

About 10% of body weight is the goal for yearlings. Age 4 they should be 25-30%, so 50ish pounds for several of these. My heaviest ate about 190 now and may make 250ish by 3ish

Thank you very much for sharing your hunt! I love that you used goats as your pack animals. I am not a fan of them as farm animals, but they can be extremely affectionate and fun to be around when they want to be.

Do you just picket them at night?

Their best years are supposed to be between 4 and 8. I’ve heard of people packing them in their teens. I doubt much past 10-12 would be useful.

Yeah all are very sweet but pretty nosy. Didn’t bring squirt guns to weaponize their greatest fear in this trip and just dealt with their curiosity around the packs.. Yeah I tie them up at night but not sure I have to, I’ve left them out before and they don’t go anywhere without me, but don’t want to risk that or have a critter come through and blow things up.

It was in Nv, as was the avatar goat, that was in '06 IIRC. My best friend was an outfitter and got me on a fair amount of goat hunts in the Ruby Mtns & East Humboldts. I found a dead goat a little bigger than the avatar goat the same day we got him.

Congrats! Looks like a mature goat, good long hair, nanny or not it's a hard-earned trophy. Hell, few people can tell the difference anyway.

I'm envious!

WOW!

What a great hunt and account. I thank you for sharing it with us and especially like the photos of your "buddies". Goats are smart, tough, and personable critters. If it weren't for their proclivity for using my truck roofs I'd raise some.

I'm going to share this with my grandson. He'll take every step of your hunt with you. wink
