Very cool story! Those are some big goats! I can see how you'd have difficulty distinguished the Billies from the Nannies.

I can really appreciate the approach you took to this hunt, the gear you brought, and the way you went about the whole experience. Top notch stuff. You're obviously a class act and genuine outdoorsman. Well done on a successful hunt!

Just got back from a goat hunt here, not for the weak-hearted.

Was that in Nevada and the goat in your avatar?

It was in Nv, as was the avatar goat, that was in '06 IIRC. My best friend was an outfitter and got me on a fair amount of goat hunts in the Ruby Mtns & East Humboldts. I found a dead goat a little bigger than the avatar goat the same day we got him.

Congrats! Looks like a mature goat, good long hair, nanny or not it's a hard-earned trophy. Hell, few people can tell the difference anyway.

I'm envious!

Knowing the Rubies well I can attest that your goat hunt was a vertical no-picnic. eek

Hey Bruce, parts of that hunt were exciting terrain-wise, it sure is a beautiful mountain range. Almost too pretty to be in Nevada!

Good story, I really like those goats!

I learned of goat packing in the late 90's from a prof at the local U who was using them to support big climbing trips. I've wanted to get some ever since!

Very cool,I had no idea people used goats for packers.Very neat, how are they when the shooting starts, skidish at all or do you practice with them near.

I've heard people use goats for packing, but the first I ever read it happened. What an adventure!!! Thanks for sharing the story and all the pictures.

Sounds like a great time man. Thanks for writing it up!

ADFG has some really useful material in their Mountain Goat ID page.

Part of it is a quiz that is kind of a nice self-check.

On your 4th pic from Day 1 I see someone else was there on Oct. 4 1997 as they carved RS on the popple tree you rested by. Just can't get away from people I guess!
