I don't know if it is the "best" or not, but I have no qualms with the Rem 870 Marine leaning up next to my bed.

Don't you get to have over-the-counter short-barrel shotguns in Canada with no extra licensing? If so, I wouldn't be running a sport gun as a dual purpose.
If you are allowed to have an AR15, then just get that instead for inside and outside the house. DD, OP's in Kanana, so, no real guns for him. So, North of the border, I'd say Mosberg 590 with a load of #1 buck. Or if necessary to keep the local Mounties happy there's the old school option. Winchester 97.

Boarder?
This thread is great.
The personnel are repelling boarders with shotgun mounted ARs.

This is exactly what I have. With a sling/bandolier with 25 more rounds of oh oh buck.
I'd rather die in a BAD gunfight than a GOOD nursing home.

My standard is a Mossberg 935 SPX, 8 rounds of 12 gauge 00 buck! Just have a crime scene cleaner on speed dial

Remington 870 Youth in 20 ga. Not too short for large folks, size and recoil easily handled by smaller statured folks, and even 7/8oz of shot is going to seriously mess up a bad guy's day.
Even with an improved choke, pattern spread is going to be less than 1' diameter at distances you would find inside most homes.
Ed I've got a NIB Mossberg 500 bantam youth 20 ga. I'd sell if a fella likes this line of thinking.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I will go to LGS and look at Remington Mossberg and Benelli pump action. I was thinking SXP but since no one recommended it it's off my list.

I’ve told my wife to use my 20 gauge double barrel!

IMHO, the guys on here need to remember that it may be a smaller statured person in their house that is called on to defend and a shotgun (or any long gun for that matter) which is too long/heavy/complicated will not be doing them any favors. Personnel preference I guess, just load it with #4 buck. Pun intended, Jesse? I'll second the #4 buck! Ed A whiff of grape shot for said personnel. You should look at hiring some personnel to clean up that [bleep] hole you live in, Jim. Personal cleanliness shouldn’t be taken lightly.

I'd throw my wife at the intruder and jump out the window.
Kick one of the little dogs for a momentary distraction.
