If I could pick up a Hi-Power in that condition over here I would be very happy
You wont have to do much to it
Nice one

Solid frame HP? Rather a rare bird, as I understand it. Several years ago I saw a non checkered EG in HP at a local show. Price was $1200, and the darned thing was near perfect. Tried to get the price down as a matter of (foolish) principle; no deal. Found out later on the forum what I had let slip through my fingers.

Oh, that would hurt. I stared at this one for 7 months before finally giving in. It's got two very cool things going for it..

1) It's an EG in 22HP
2) It's the lowest serial numbered EG we know of

If anybody has a lower EG, I'd love to hear about it.

Buttplate is a replacement. Not a bad replacement, but that lower screw definitely ain’t right.

You beat me by 200. I thought it might be another 22HP that would do it.

Yep. Every 22HP we’ve seen had a takedown barrel on it, whether it was a takedown model or not.

Calhoun - has the butt stock been replaced? Nice find!

Jaaak - holding out on us...how about some details on the markings? Any checkering?

Do either of your barrels have the last 3 digits stamped?

Well... it’s factory, but not original.

Thinking a factory replacement. An R buttstock from the 50’s? Stamped with last 4 of serial number and has a couple assembly stamps.

My EG 22 HP is serial # 3468xx. It's in pristine condition. will have to check later whether the barrel is numbered to the receiver.

Well David that makes number 10 in my data and a new low number for the EG's.

Will tomorrow bring yet another new low serial for the EG's or the eleventh 22HP? Stay tuned. grin

If production in 1935 was spread evenly through the year, the 1,000 serial number difference between David's and mine would be about 2.5 months apart. So not really a big difference. But it's getting closer and closer to 345,801 which most sources have as the beginning of 1935.

David, I think this is yours? It is in very good condition.

Rick,

Mine is just an ordinary, uncheckered EG that happens to be in 22 HP. No special factory markings. Takedown barrel, of course, but no partial ser. no. on barrel. The two good things about it are the caliber and the fact that there are no non-factory holes drilled in it.

I have posted some pictures in the image gallery titled "Savage 99EG - 22 Hi Power". If someone could move them here, I would appreciate it. I know I have seen the instructions on how to do this several times, but can't seem to find them now. Rick, could we make a sticky of the instructions and put it right below the Image Gallery instructions?

You will notice in the photos that a previous owner stamped "BOB" on both sides of the receiver. The wood has been varnished. The scope is a Weaver K3. The scope was on it when I bought the rifle. The front sight was a very high sight that looked out of place with the scope on it. I replaced it with a home-made blank made out of a front sight that came on another 99 I bought long ago.

Here ya go, Jaaack. Is there something stamped on the left side of the receiver above the catridge counter hole? I think I can make out a B08?

Thanks Rory,

See last paragraph above. BOB stamped both sides of receiver. It’s on lower left of right side of receiver but doesn’t show in photo.

Oops, missed that. Darned work keeps interrupting my personal life. grin

Well, at least Bob didn't scratch his entire social into the receiver. That stamp isn't very noticeable.

Same "22 Hi-P SAVAGE" stamp as mine. Wonder what years they used that?

Rory, that's my EG in my gun show display at Denver or Ogden. I'm hauling dirt today before the weather gets bad but will post pics tomorrow and PM you and Jeff the full serial number.

Heck, maybe we’ve found the missing link showing the original name was GE! grin

Better

Is there something funky about the Schnabel on the forearm or is the camera or my eyes playing tricks on me?

I had to pull the gun back out to look at it after posting that picture also.

The forearm is indeed slightly uneven at the front, with the left side slightly lower. Cracked and refinished, or just mfr'ing flaw? Dunno, it's hard to see holding the gun. That camera angle is the perfect angle to see it.
