One mistake on that list.....Lee Van Cleef wasn't a villain in "A Few Dollars More" like it is written on that list.

Why isn't Gregory Peck on that list?

Good list. Some fun memories there. Can't include 'em all but I would have found a way to add Ken Curtis. I think he was born on a ranch down in Colorado. Did some singing with Sons of the Pioneers. He was in some of the old time westerns like the Searchers and The Horse Soldiers. Mainly, he was one of the best sidekicks of all time as Festus on Gunsmoke.

Another "correction." The author said that James Garner was wounded in WW II. Garner was not in WW II. He was in the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War where he was wounded twice.

Just as a matter of trivia, when one sees all the rather flashy and flamboyant dress of the many "cowboys" over the years, especially in the Saturday afternoon westerns ... that style of clothing, guns, fancy horse tack, etc., was created by the great star, Tom Mix. It was a standard method of dress for him in his westerns. He did it to stand out and be "different" from the other cowboy stars of that era. Afterward, with his great success, most of the cowboy stars adapted his style.

And Sackett is correct: Gregory Peck should have been included as a great western star.

FWIW.

Saying that John Wayne epitomizes a "cowboy" is laughable..................

Cooper was a cowboy.

They got it right about Ben Johnson being a real cowboy though.

He was.

Old school.

Quote
Rodeo performer and film star Slim Pickens was born Louis Burton Lindley Jr. in 1919. He played a cowboy for much of his movie career, after getting a start as a rodeo clown. Pickens enlisted in the United States Army during WWII, and when asked his occupation answered “rodeo.” The recruiter misread this as “radio” and Pickens spent his enlistment working at a radio station.

Holy Smoke!

Walter Brennan! Two years in France WWI, gets sidetracked in LA on his way to grow pineapples in Guatemala. Years of bit parts and extra roles, including two Three Stooges movies.

Gets a bunch of teeth kicked out accidentally in a fight scene, parlays that battered appearance into THREE Oscars.

Later becomes the oldest guy at that time to ever have a song go Top 40. Does it again with another song, buys a 1,200 acre ranch in Oregon.

Married to the same woman all his life, successful, stable kids.

Golly 😎
