I will, kid. Hoping to see a correct answer.

While enjoying my paid tropical vacation in that little airplane at the left, I often heard "pop...pop...pop" sounds in my boom mic - and it wasn't static. Never whizzed, but did learn to make immediate sharp turns!

Some of you guys are full of shat.

You can hear bullets pass. Loudly.

Ask anyone that has spent time getting shot at, or even spent time scoring hits in the pits of a military range.

But, you won't hear it coming at you. What you hear is the noise after it passes, then the report.

It's hard to get recorded sound of a bullet. But here is one example that comes close...

The closest thing to a "whiz" I've heard were .22 rounds.

They buzz like an angry bee.

That loud 'SNAP" in the first video is pretty wicked sounding (.223 round at 300 yds)

Correct me if I am wrong but the question is "can you hear a bullet coming toward you" the answer is NO. You most certainly can hear the bullet when it passes by you.

The loudest .22RF "buzz" come if the bullet has glanced off something and is tumbling in flight. That's quite loud.

Deformed bullets from high powered rifles can make a pretty good buzz or whistle too.

I'll just add that if you look down and see rapid fire white flashes from 50 or 60 different spots, there's no need to hear 'em to know those bullets are coming your way!

It's both.

The bullet breaking the sound barrier, and the report of the cartridge.

It happens so fast the two sounds blend to make one report.

You can take the muzzle blast away with a suppressor, in hyper sonic rounds, but not the report of the bullet breaking the sound barrier.

According to an Army field manual the report of a gun is in four parts:

The air preceding the bullet before it clears the muzzle.

The 'uncorking' of the barrel as the bullet clears the muzzle.

The gas exiting the barrel after the bullet exits.

The bullet's passage through the air.

When we were kids we performed highly scientific tests exploring this. One got behind a barrier and the other fired a .22 over his head(I know, I know).

At about 40 yds the sound was a hard 'tick'. At over 100 yds it was a 'ffft'.

No offense to any Army guys out there... but does the Army always try to over-explain things? smile

Of the four parts described, the one that is not mentioned (and I was taught was the real cause of the BANG,) is the sound air makes when it re-enters the barrel which has just created a near-perfect vacuum.

Not arguing I am right here by any means. I would never dream of challenging such an eloquent explanation as the US Army.

The bullet will be past you by the time the sound reaches you. Duh.

Yes. Field manuals are written by senior NCOs who think they know everything and set out to prove it to the world while filling in time 'til retirement. (Army guy)

Did an experiment once. Made up black powder blanks up to about 20 grains and fired with a big garbage bag taped over the end of the barrel. The amount of hot gas that fills the bag is surprising. As well as how much it shrinks when it becomes cool gas. So you got this great bubble of hot gas expanding as violently as it can. AKA shock wave. Then the bubble dissipates quickly as it cools so the shock wave has the characteristics of an impulse. More of a bang than a boom.

You are not wrong.

Heard a few passing by but never heard one coming...
