Actually, Mule Deer loaded Federal's 136gr Edge and 140gr Bonded Tip, and 170 Berger Elite with 7977, but used Re26 with the ELD-X.

It is a shame I can´t find it overseas since he got 3,079 fps anda 0.76" group, which sounds encouraging!

I am pushing a Berger 150 gr VLD just under 3000 fps it is a great shooting bullet can’t wait to take it Elk hunting.

Any love for the Barnes 129gr LRX factory ammo? I see Midway has em on sale with a $3 rebate per box too.

Modern ammo is certainly changing things.

The lowly 270 is the poor mans version of the 6.5 PRC if you go with factory ammo. Not much of a difference at all.

Basically my way of saying that out to 500yds, there is really no difference between the factory 270 145 Eldx Ammo and the Factory 6.5 PRC 143 Eldx Ammo. And just about everything with the 270 is cheaper and readily available.

I’ve never shot an animal past 375-ish yards, so I’m thinking the 270 may meet my needs.

The 129 Barnes LRX ammo is listed at 3140 for the 270 Win. Pretty hard to go wrong with that for a factory ammo shooting rifle if shooting a mono is wanted.

The .257 Roberts may meet your needs. Or at least that's my experience.

The big advantage of the 6.5 Creedmoor compared to the .270 Winchester at such "normal" ranges is about 2/3 the .270's recoil--and very fine accuracy with inexpensive factory ammo. The lighter recoil makes practice shooting more pleasant--IF you shoot more than the average hunter. The accurate factory ammo makes a difference if you don't handload.

I shot a Mule Deer cross-canyon @ 560yds 10 days ago with a .270Win/140TSX @ 3050fps. 1-shot, the legs sucked up, the deer landed on his chin, gave a couple kicks, and was done. I've taken 3 other deer @ 500-535yds w/270's and either the 140TSX or 150ABLR.

Got a 270 in yesterday, and put a SS 3-9 on it. Shot pretty well with the factory 145 Precision hunter ammo with several bullets going through the same hole. Didn't really shoot for groups but should have been an easy sub moa. About 1.7 mils to hit steel at 430 with .75" zero . 600 should be no problem. Tell you what, with a Ridgeline with brak, at 8lbs 3oz with scope, you don't even feel recoil. Pretty nice.


Going to kill a few bucks with it here in the next week.

My sons 270 is an old Rem 721 that has had the action trued and a Hart barrel installed by Mike Bryant. It shoots the 145 ELD-X very good. We are getting 3030 fps with H4831 in a 22" barrel, with a Silencerco Harvester for suppression. We have shot that combination out in the 1050 to 1300 yard range quite a bit. At 1000-1150 it is still doing very well accuracy-wise, but by 1250-1300 it is falling into trans-sonic and starting to open up. BC seems to be pretty true, it is a really good bullet if you are stuck with that 1-10" twist that nearly all 270's seem to have.

Out to the 500-600 yard distance it hits good and hard, better than the 6.5 Creed from an energy standpoint (though the Creed is better in the wind). Eventually the better BC of the 143 ELD-X reels in the 145 out of the 270, but not until it is past the distance that I would really shoot a deer with either of them. Personally I would draw the line with either about 800-850 yards for deer, and that would be under very good conditions.
