Unfortunately, records show that the first intentional “area bombing” of civilians in the Second World War took place at Monchengladbach on 11 May 1940 at Churchill’s orders (the day after he dramatically became prime minister), and four months before the Luftwaffe began its Blitz of British cities.

Had I lived then, I would have been in perfect accord with Detrich Bonhoffer. At the very first he rejected the Furher Principle as bare naked idolatry. Then he resisted the mass murderer unto martyrdom.

Not at all.....it was the Nazis that did it first.....Churchill responded by sending (about) eighty Lancaster's to carpet bomb Berlin....He really pi$$ed off Hitler who demanded retaliation....In the end it was a deadly outcome to German citizens.....the Brits bombing by night and U S B-17s bombing (so called) military targets by day....even after all this, it was still the Russians that lost the greatest number of civilians....none of whom were bombed by The Brits or Americans.

There was at the time a great deal of angst of conscience about fire bombing Dresden.
Not to vindictate Hitler, but to be reflective on our own conduct, in the context of our historical connection to Grotious to Augustine and some framework of just war theory.

Pat Buchanan brought out some damning questions concerning the wisdom and moral character of Churchill. I think it is worth examining in the cold light of facts. I see no nazi-esque sympathies in this line of research. Pat argues that WW2 cost Britain its Empire, and set the precedent for its current moral collapse and implosion.

To the idiots that actually believe something that stupid, you may want to check your World War 2 timeline as to when the Germans started bombing civilians. It happened in September of 1939 during the invasion of Poland, take a look at what Warsaw looked like in October of that year.

Yep. Read The Myth Of German Villainy, by Benton L. Bradberry. Much of what we think of as the history of the two world wars was mere Allied war propaganda uncritically incorporated into the history books afterwards.

There is a body of research on the negative affect of atrocities in war.
Unjust atrocities tend the strengthen the enemies resolve, provide him with factual propaganda, and weaken the righteous resolve of your own side and it's allies. Many examples could be sited, Algiers for one.

The broad view understanding is that the French brought in some Nazi fellows to torture the Moslems. Which worked and collapsed the revolt. But word got out and world opinion flared up against France and they had to walk away from the whole thing in shame. Win the battle, lose the war.
