When approaching a stop sign/light, is there any difference in brake pad/disc wear, if one has constant pressure on brake pedal versus pumping the brakes several times. In either case the stopping distance is the same.

Trust me, the cost is not an issue. Wife and I are fighting over which is right.

Constant pressure to dissipate the heat from the rotor.

On vehicles equipped with ABS pumping the pedal defeats the purpose. As far as wear between the 2 it’s negligible but on either system if you have to pump the brakes to stop, you have a problem.

Whatever a woman says about driving is usually wrong. I'd approach the disagreement from that perspective.

On a modern auto pumping the brakes is not necessary, constant pressure gradually increasing is best.

No offense but it seems like a silly thing to fight about, Save it for the important stuff.

My wife is on the gas up until the last possible moment to hit the brakes. I ask her, "you ever heard of coasting?"

Doesn't go over well.

The wear on the pads is proportional to the force required to stop the vehicle. It doesn't matter how that is accomplished, either lightly continuous or last second.

On the airplane I fly we're told that brake heating and wear is dependent upon the number of brake applications, not the force of braking. They teach us to not pump them but rather one actuation of the brakes with modulated force results in less heat buildup and wear. This is on a heavy jet with carbon fiber brakes so I'm not sure how applicable that is to a car.

My take - a simple matter - extent of friction required to stop the inertia and resultant wear is determined by reaction of components. Timing of friction action will matter little, if at all, with regard to resultant wear.

How about multiple brake applications, same total number of calories produced but with lower peek temperature.
No?

She'll learn, maybe, once she glazes the pads, and they aren't home the next time they're needed to stop.

Fear not, the car in front will work just fine or the car crossing the intersection.

How about using the hand brake and save wear and tear on the front pads - save them for a special occasion.
