Someone shot a cow and calf elk in so. Idaho a couple weeks ago and just left them. IDFG is asking for any info people can give. The cow was radio-collared as part of a fish & game study.
It's unlikely that the culprit will ever be caught unless he's an idiot who brags to friends or on Facebook.

Poachers in Tn poach it because they want the meat or the antlers. Never seen a deer here just left without something carved off.
Seen calves shot and left but I think that dude was bangin someone's ol lady.

Maybe the radio collar scared them off.

That reminds me of the kid who shot his neighbors pet deer here years ago. Deer had a collar, and about a yard of bright colored material tied around the collar. Kid said he thought it was another deer that had gotten into something....despite the fact that he had even petted the deer back before the season, AND despite the fact that the deer was on the neighbors property.

Shooting a game animal just to be shooting it is beyond me. Some years ago, a guy near Sun Valley shot a cow and calf moose from the road and just left them. A woman hiker saw him do it but she didn't know anything about hunting laws. He convinced her he had tags for them and she went on her way. She didn't get his truck license or anything. They never caught him.

A guy who helped log off some of the oak on my property up north had kind of a subsistence level lifestyle and always took some deer to help fill the freezer. He told me that he stopped that when our poaching fines went to over $1,800.00 per offence with a loss of license, firearms and maybe even a vehicle. WI. got real tough on poachers and it has made a lot of difference.

Someone usually squeals.

If you are gonna poach something.....you should at least take the meat.

shooting it and leaving it rot the ground is another

Have no respect for anyone that does that.....

All it takes is a license plate number....done deal......

That doesn't explain also shooting the calf. Usually elk are herded up this time of year. It's unknown if there were other elk around.

long time ago, when i was first starting out with a badge, was told by a deputy to sort of overlook some poaching in certain areas. The animals were never left like that. people doing the poaching had no money, and were trying to feed their kids. It kind of went that way, you knew who was doing it, but in some situations it was wink, wink, because of trying to feed families.
wanton killing is another story. It's spread to all kinds of things these days, bear, elk, deer, and shooting wild horses.
we have one guy that eventually made state representative. he got caught gut shooting elk, as he didn't want them on the range with his cattle.

Hanging by the balls sounds like a good punishment.

Yeah, they were no doubt just a couple of schitheads out killing stuff.

Unless they thought the calf wouldn't survive the winter?

For the record, in Idaho there's nothing illegal about shooting a game animal wearing a collar. You just need to return the collar to the IDFG.

I have friends in Arkansas who know and post on FB people shooting horses, mules, cattle, goats, llamas. dogs. Usually not even clean kills. Hard to catch them, and if any do get caught they better hope for the sherriff coming along
