Sunday night my wife and I started watching the 1947 movie "The Bishop's Wife," and finished it last night. For those that have never seen it, it stars Cary Grant. Loretta Young, and David Niven. The plot is that the Bishop, Niven, has become very self centered about wanting to build a new cathedral, and has forsaken his family. An angel, Grant comes to the bishops rescue, only to fall in love in love with the bishops wife, Young. The setting is at Christmas, and of course has numerous references to God and the real reason we celebrate Christmas. Of course, it also has a happy ending, at least for the bishop and his wife.
After watching it, I said to her......there is no way that Hollywood would make a movie like that today. Hollywood used to turn out a lot movies with religious themes, especially those with a Christmas setting. Even the campfire's favorite actor, John Wayne, made "The Three Godfathers." I guess that in this age of political correctness, making a movie that shows any kind of a religious theme would be a no-no.

Okay...here's how I see it.....one can watch an old movie where the cowboys have those sixteen shooters and the good guy always wins, or watch a modern movie where the cowboys are queers. Not much of a choice the way I see it.

The new ones are far advanced in computer graphics and action. What that does is reduce the need for gifted actors. Their flaws are hidden by pizzazz. Many of the actors now would never make it 50 years ago.

My issue with going to the pictures is there are other people there. I do not really like being around other people. Especially city types.

New movies may have CGI and all that jazz, but they all truly lack a real story, like the writers used to write.

I was flipping through channels and stopped on Its A Wonderful Life.
My jaw dropped to the floor when the 23 yr old Middle Daughter commented on how timeless Frank Capra's film is and its comparable structure to the 2008/2009 financial crisis in relation to the to big to fail banking institutions. She also stated that George Bailey was not the real hero of the movie but his wife Mary who was the consistent anchor of steadfastness, courage and George's bulwark.

Did they actually show the bishop and his wife experiencing a "happy ending"?

As to old movies versus Hollywood today in general, the one thing that I appreciate in the old movies is that they left the scenes of graphic violence and cruelty to the imagination rather than making them the focal point of the movie like they do today.
