I should add that I never was in love with Cabelas, but they were at least worth a shot. I never have been a BPS fan at all. Cabelas went from being worth a shot to just another Bass Pro Shop that's not worth walking into.

Someone want to explain to me how this is Ben Sasse fault? Sidney wasn't much before Cabela's and that's what it will be after.
Seems to me that Cabela's would have been better off staying family owned. I liked it when it was. Better stuff and a better variety of stuff. Shows that bigger is not always better. I'm sure Dick and Jim banked a nice check. Comes a time to cash out.
I shared a camp with Mary and Dick Cabela in RSA some years ago. Nice people and avid, avid hunters. They tested much of the gear they sold in there stores.

I always got the impression that Cabela’s “spec-ed” much of their hunting clothing. OTOH, BPS just kinda slaps their Redhead name on whatever junk they find, and calls it good.
May or may not be true, but it feels that way. Difference between an “outfitter” and a “retailer”... This is exactly it!

According to the video, if you watched it, Cabelas was making 2B a year on 4B in sales. That's far from fading or failing. They were forced into selling because they didn't have the nads to tell Singer to fug off. That would be Tommy Milner...he wanted his buy out!

I was a satisfied Cabela’s customer starting in ‘84, shopping by catalog and phone. I remember visiting Sydney 20yrs later, and it was incredible. I think I was there for six hours.
The BPS buyout has ruined the company and other than sitting on a large pile of CC points, I have no interest in shopping there anymore. I didn’t realize there was a greedy POS to blame. I thought it was just kids or grandkids that inherited and cashed out. This was my thinking also.Never knew of this Singer guy.

If Bass Pro is as bad as we think, and it is that bad, or worse, someone someplace will pop up to challenge them, and likely be successful at it. Happens all the time.
FWIW, it felt and still feels like Cabelas, which started as a catalog retailer, should have been extremely well positioned to enter the world of internet shopping. How many of us, their mainstay customers, like to shop? Not very many. Too many stores built in too many places it seems to me. Wonder whose brilliant idea that was.

When Gander Mountain was in trouble, wasn't Cabelas the one to buy the catalog portion, which I assume included online?

Cabelas killed themselves.....so Bass Pro is the bad guy for scooping up their debt and trying to right the ship?

I tried to shop at Cabelas the last few years, and I left the last 5 times with nothing. I had a handful of gift certificates, and nothing was interesting. I sold my gift cards on the classified section. It is two hours from my house, but if I am down that way, I never stop in.

The real issue is Cabelas was mis managed, lost their business, got purchased and is now being downsized. I feel sorry for the people in Sydney. Wrong. Bass Pro specialized in cheap chitt Chinese copy cat merchandise and folks bought the cheap crap and left Cabelas for it. They undercut Cabelas with inferior quality stuff and drove Cabelas down. You prove post after post that your an idiot and have 0 clue of what your talking about. At least your consistent!! That is not what happened in the least!
