I have 3 - 8lb jugs and 1 - 1lb jug that need to be replaced under the recall for IMR 4007ssc. I have quite a bit of IMR 4831 and 4064. Here's what I currently reload:
222 223 22-250 220 swift 243 6mm rem 25-06 257 wby 7mm mag 30-06 308
What would be a good powder replacement that would cover these calibers as much as possible? I need to look up my loads when I get home to see what else I've used.

I requested Varget. With your list of rounds and powder already on hand, maybe H-4350 would be a good one. DF

My first thought was Varget or 4064. Do you get to choose more than one flavor or do you only get one?

I'm not sure. I tried calling them today, but of course they're not open on Fridays. I made a spreadsheet last night with all the calibers I reload and the powders that have overlap. 4064, 4350, and 4831 had the most overlap.

Hodgdon is reimbursing with money, not powder. I saw your post on the other thread. Someone pointed out it was cheaper to reimburse a single pound for $35 than to ship a pound and pay hazmat. I'm thinking at 25 pounds it will be cheaper for them to replace my powder than cut a check for $875.

So's use the small kernel version, IMR 4895.... not much difference in load data in most cartridges...

They don't pay hazmat. Only us pea ons do. All that is required is the paperwork. But they don't want you to know that.

So I just got off the phone with them. They are paying $225 per 8lb keg and $35 per 1lb jug. Their logic is that they don't necessarily always have all powders in stock, and rather than a customer wait for it, they reimburse so the customer can purchase what he/she wants.

With your question in mind, the only powder that is out there that could work in all of them is H4895. It will work in anything but there is no cartridge that I know of that it is the best powder. If I was in your situation and after looking at Hodgdons load data I would get a 1lb each of IMR 4166 and IMR 4451. The 4166 for the small end and the 4451 for the larger cartridges and they will both meet in the middle size cartridges. I have started to see data for them on some of the bullet manf. sites, besides Hodgdons. If you do go that way, post and let everyone know how they worked. Start low and work up

OK, folks....I've read the Hodgdon recalls for IMR 4007 ssc, both the early recalls for the six specific lot numbers and the recent total product recall and replacement offers. I have found this to be the best powder I've ever used in any of my 220 Swifts! I still have a couple single pound containers, and one 8 lb jug that have never been opened. None of them are from the original recalled lots. I've been in this reloading game since the very early 1960's, probably to the tune of over a million rounds for High Power Rifle competition, USPSA competition, varmint and hunting loads. I'm somewhat familiar with powder deterioration, because I always check the containers when they haven't been used very recently. I have discovered a very few instances of powder going bad in some old surplus powder that I'd had for probably 35 plus years AFTER it was pulled from the original DCM surplus AP ammo. It hadn't started turning color yet, it just lost the fresh "ether" smell, and hadn't even started smelling acrid yet. My question is: has anyone actually heard of a documented case of IMR 4007 ssc detonating?? I'm not usually one to ignore warnings as usually to do so ends in one's peril.....BUT, I also tend to believe in these litigious times that it's usually best for any corporate entity to CYA in every way possible! My not overly extensive online searches have not found any documented cases of this powder combusting due to instability or deterioration. Has anyone here heard of said instances? My inclination is that if it looks and smells good, and still groups well, load the 1 lb'ers, and kill stuff!
I'm all ears except for being chided about possibly ignoring the recall notice.....

Hodgdon is reimbursing with money, not powder. Got my check for $35 from Hodgdon last week. Earlier, they had informed me that rather than substitute another powder, which their original statement said, they were sending out checks.

I liked 4007, worked well for me. After the bulletin, I poured it out in my yard, didn't fill the can with water like they directed. It must have been pretty bad for Hodgdon to take that step. First it was a few lot numbers and I was OK. Then it was the whole batch.
Close burn rate powders are Pw Pro 2000, which has worked very well in the .223 with 62 gr. bullets. Some say it's the same or very similar to CFE-223. Leverevolution burn rate is close and I've seen it used in other than the 30-30's, etc. H-380- is an old one, great in the 338-06 with 180's to 225's. I don't use 250's in that one. Seafire and gunner500 both like it in the 338-06. Big Game isn't that far off, so I think we can find some good substitutes.
