I had a 1911 in 38 special that only shot wad cutters. I had to use certain brass that was thinner or it would not feed well. I only used factory wad cutter ammo, and used that brass. If I used other brass I would have a slight bulge. I should have kept that one, and many others.

...never had much use for them...

My first centerfire handgun was a 1970 vintage Model 19...put a documented 20K rounds through it in the 10 years that I had it and zero wadcutters ever went through the gun...for that matter there was a total of only 6 rounds of .38 Special ever through the gun and only 1-2 boxes of factory .357s. Cast wise 99% were the 358156 Lyman/Thompson gas check bullet with the remainder of the jacketed bullets being the 146 grain Speer HP and Sierra JHCs.... From it's sale in 1980 till the early 2000s I never had a .38 or .357 revolver that I can remember. All I shot was .38 Super and .41 Magnum. Were not any commercially available wadcutters available for .41s at that point.

Have always found that a SWC is just as accurate at close range and way more accurate at long range and cuts a nice round hole in a paper target. They also can be loaded into a cylinder much faster than flat faced wadcutters by most people.

Guess I can see the point of having them around for making up low velocity target loads for initial training of people to shoot a centerfire handgun but for me it would just be one more bullet in the inventory that rarely gets used...

That said I do now have two WC molds for my .41s. A 165 grain LEE PRECISION and a MP HBWC that also has pins to make it a full wadcutter. The MP gets shot usually as a big HP and I will probably use the 165 in plinking loads in the .41 Special for the Taurus Titanium Tracker...

But I am sure they work for a lot of folks otherwise they would have vanished from the ammo shelves...

Anybody have a good source for 148gr wadcutters? Been shooting the Hornady's but they are pretty expensive.

I've been using these HST's when the J-frame gets the nod - 130 grain +P. There's a wadcutter in there somewhere.

I carry those alternating in the cylinder with a couple of the Buffalo Bore 150 gr. hardcast in my Airweight J Frames.
