Wow, never knew that. Who did they purportedly steel it from? Mauser? If so, I thought all bets were off with Mauser after WWI, which conflict also negated the royalties U.S. gov't was paying for 1903 Springfield infringement on Mauser patents.

While I can agree with some of what you say, he did say the 340 was the first he was "aware of"".. I didn't read the article, I seldom look at newer magazines, let alone read them.. But Boddington is not a retro kind of guy... He is into modern stuff.. He didn't B.S. anyone or try to be an authority from what I can see.. He made a statement about his knowledge.. I think writers are often handed an assignment, try this, and write about it.. Not all shooters are as into guns as many on this site.. I enjoy them and reading about ones I have only passing interest in.. The 99's are not my thing I have one and have had several.. They are fine rifles, but I am a bot action guy. My first rifle I bought with my own money was a 340 in .222... Wish I would have kept that little thing... But we all have our own likes and opinions.. That is what makes this site enjoyable..
