Did the model F in 284 ever have a lever safety or were they just available with the tang safety and the ugly gold trigger?

No, and yes. You could buy one in a DE or PE. Thems not ugly too bad.

284F only came from the factory with tang safety and gold trigger.

Having said that, there is probably one out there to prove me wrong.

By memory, my cut checkered 1964 99F may not have a gold trigger, but it definitely has the tang safety. I'd have to check to be sure.

I have pics of 3 99F 284s in the 1073xxx to 1075xxx, 2 have cut checkering, 1 has double-diamond pressed, all 3 have a gold trigger.

And the 284 F receiver was different in much of it's design, so I'd be very doubtful of any factory made with lever safety.

You know, I have said time and again that the only post-mil I would want would be a .250 99A carbine. All this talk about .284's has me revising that thought. Always been intrigued by the caliber, but never owned a gun with which to shoot it.

Gary, the mighty 284 absolutely smashes whatever I've shot with it. It really gets the job done muy pronto with the Speer 145 grain btsp. Here's one train wreck piled up in a rock slide, from a 364 yard head shot! Nothing to be afraid of when carrying a 99 in 284.

Those are some impressive blacktails killed with any caliber. The one on the rockslide looks a little bruised, but rack looks like it survived.

Looks like I can take the DL284 as backup on the Wyoming mule deer hunt rather than the 300 Weatherby. I used 140 gr. Nosler Accubonds on the elk. I'll have to try the Speer 145 gr. BTSP and see if I can get a good group with them.

I had watched him for a while trying to decide whether or not to shoot at him while he worked his way towards the timber. Mostly just waiting to see if there was a bigger buck behind him. Before I knew it he was in the brush so I took what I had, which was head shot. Not my first choice but I got lucky this time.

I've made a convert or two to the mighty 284. One I can think of a friend and I were out quad riding one day with his son and my wife. We stopped to eat lunch and do some shooting as is our custom. When I emptied my soda I jumped on the quad and ran the empty can down the canyon a ways and set it up on a logging landing.When I came back I could make out a shiny spot in the sun, but not much else. It was 426 yards using a rangefinder. My buddy was carrying his dads old 7 mag and he wanted to take a shot at it. His shot was a foot low and left. He didn't want any more of that so I sat down on the ground, leaning up against the four wheeler tire, and used the shooting sticks to steady the .284.

I held for 17" of elevation and let er rip. At the shot the can went straight up in the air, about 35'! It was like slow motion when it reached the top it seemed to hang there, then drifted back to the ground, landing a few yards away from where it started. We all sat there in silence for a minute, then I slowly got up and slipped the rifle into the scabbard. I tried to look cool like, "Oh yeah, happens all the time" but we all had a good laugh.

What a show the old .284 put on that day, but it does have a habit of doing that. It's a fantastic cartridge and that Speer bullet really makes it a hammer. Mines killed a few deer and bear and each time it's like the hand of God. I can't say enough about the 99 in a 284. I think I have 5 of them now!

I am a big. big fan of the .284! I had 3 different 99s in the caliber but Ralph kept buying them from me. I had one made on a Mexican Mauser with a 24" barrel that i used for whitetails in Texas. It is a laser!

I've used nothing but 139 and 140 grain bullets in it. Has anyone loaded anything heavier for the 99?

Mike when I got my first one I asked around and the guys on the fire pointed me to the 145 Speer btsp as being ideal for the short action 99 due to it's stubby shape and (advertised).502 ballistic coefficient. Not sure if the BC is actual or just advertising hype but the bullet shape is perfect for the Savages 2.8" OAL and the neck holds it well.

My load is 57 grains of H4831 SC with a CCI large rifle primer. *Do not try this at home. I overload everything to the point of exploding and raining parts all over the roof.

*kidding, but that's my disclaimer in case something bad happens to some okie somewhere using my load!

A 99C in 284 is what got me into 99's way back in my teens, and I don't have one yet. Couple of DL's and an F in 284, but no 99C's.

I looked at a 99c in 284 the other day ,had a scope ,cant remember what kind ,they wanted $1200 ! it wasn't a collector by any means but a good hunting gun.Its in a vermont gunshop. Don

Had 2 Win 88, in 284 and 1 Savage 99 in 284 hunted with the Win 88 284 up here. Speer 145 gr bullet seemed to work the best with the short mag length required. Hunted with the 150 gr Nosler about like a slow 7-08 in a bolt rifle.


Win 88 in 284 was a lucky rifle for me though got a 52" Bull Moose and a Dall Ram with it. Win factory loads used a short 125 gr and 150 gr bullets to work in short mag confines.

Guess what I am saying is don't expect great bullet selection and bolt rifle performance in a 99 or 88 in 284 Winchester. Still a neat rifle.

Yeah, that seems to be the going price. Have seen some, but haven't run across one that fits my cheap purchasing habits.

I’ve had 2 284s and both of them eventually went down the road. There was nothing wrong with them but I would keep asking myself the rhetorical question, what can this gun do that my 300s and 308s can’t do? Couldn’t come up with a good enough answer to keep a gun that cost 2x to own

284 definitely has a “cool” factor though. Kind of like the 250 Savage.

I would not be afraid to take a 284 on a mule deer or elk hunt though. Can’t say the same for the 250

We have taken 4-5 deer with the 284. It’s all business and very accurate.

The .284 was my first real deer rifle. I bought it in 1967 about the same time I started reloading rifle cartridges and IMR-4350 and 130 gr. Speer bullets were used in it. Killed my first deer with it a year later, one 315 yards, the other 298 yards. Furthest I've killed deer since then has been 125 yards.
