Been awhile since I've been here--love this subtension discussion. Great info! Have put in many days researching and applying subtension in the field. IMO the most important concepts are the adaptation of mil and moa math to any subtension system such as any multi-stadia reticles, iron sights and even archery sight pins for downrange zeroing, and rangefinding math.

Should be a sticky bump.

Agreed: It should be a sticky!

As soon as I got my first SWFA MQ, I saved that thread. It's the best tutorial on the subject that I've ever found.

From the reticle and target, dial- left .1mil to center the group. Loosen turret screws, lift off, spin and align with the "0" indicator mark.

Zeroing is done. No mental gymnastics, no fuss, no conversions, no weirdness. Think only in mils. Break it down into tenths visually and do not try to convert it to something else. See where the impact is with the reticle, adjust what it says, and done. Firing a statistically significant amount of rounds to see the true center of the group is important as you can easily be off .2 mil with a "1 moa all day" long rifle if you "zero" off of 3 shot groups.
This is a great and informative thread. As a guy who is considering buying one of these scopes, I have a question on your resetting of the zero value after you are sighted dead on at your beginning, "zero mil" reference range:

Is there a way to reset the elevations dial on this scope all the way down to the zero on the "number of turns" (or whatever you call it) scale, where it looks like it belongs?

Thanks,
Rex

Only way to do that would be to use a 20 MOA rail/Burris Sig inserts/etc to bring down POI.

It is irrelevant what you think. What matters is the TRUTH.

Seems an odd design. I can see it being that way on the windage but why set up the elevation indicator that way? Looking at that it looks like the scope has already been dialed up 30 mils.

Like I said - great lesson and tutorial, I just had a question on the turret "display" not having owned an SWFA yet.

Thanks,
Rex

It’s a typical revolution-indicated erector turret design, not specific to SWFA. The turret threads out with “up” adjustment, and the horizontal hashmarks indicate which revolution the turret is on. To zero the scope on the first revolution, you’d have to mount it so the erector is near the extreme bottom of its adjustment range.
