Has anyone put this combination together yet? I’m thinking hard about it. With a SS 3-9 on top, it seems like it would be an easy-shooting, sweet way to get a 7 3/4 pound rifle to launch the 147 ELD at 2950 fps plus.

Is it worth the hassle over just buying a Fieldcraft Creedmoor?

It was worth it to me.
$650 for rifle
$300 barrel
$300 chamber, thread, bead blast and bed the recoil lug.

$1250 all in.

Barrel is a Rock Creek 24” 1:8 twist
Was sold to me as #2 contour but muzzle dia. is .575 so I think it’s a mountain rifle contour
Talley LW lows
PMII 10x42

8 lbs 0 oz on the nose.

Kimber Montana’s are one of the better donors for a rebarrel in my opinion as the stocks are good.

How did you get the rifle for 650?

I watched TDN smoke an Idaho bull with his.

I’ve shot it to 600ish on steel myself with factory 143s. It’s a very impressive combination to be sure. Were I starting over, I think I’d follow his lead exactly.

I did some more searching on here and found TDNs rifle as well as other info. This seems like it might be a really good way to go.

If it's half as good as my SAUM you did, it's a keeper.

The 8400 Montanas are my favorite. Stock fits me just right.

I'd pick a chambering, grab a barrel and send it to Shaen. Cant think of a much better all around rifle for big game.

I picked up another 8400 in 270 wsm with the idea of doing a 6.5 prc on it. I thought it'd work well due to the 3" mag box. I've had a 7 wsm 8400 for years that's one of my favorites.

I had a 300 wsm too but I gave it to a friend I hunt with after we both drew good elk tags a few years ago. He shot a 5x5 bull with it and like the gun . He always helps me out so I told him to keep it.

What would be a good contour to do a prc on a Montana but still be able to thread it for a can at 22"?

Does shooter71 have a website for gunsmithing?

I’ve run suppressors on a handful of factory dupes. A couple factory lengths (7/08, 6.5CMs) and a couple cut back to 18-20. No issues running a 7/16 to 1/2” adapter where needed.

Very nice rifle. I like my Tikka conversion, but if Kimbers were available LH I would do one tomorrow.

Ive had several custom rifles built on Kimber Montana's 8400s, two 300 PRCs and just waiting for my 6.5 PRC to be finished on a Kimber Montana 8400 (WSM donor) with a 23" #1 contour fluted Benchmark 1-8 twist barrel

Heres a cpl pictures of the last 6.5 PRC we built for a donation rifle to the WSS of BC
8400 action trued & Squared, trigger lightened to 2.5lbs, charcoal/pewter gunkote on all metal surfaces, 22" Hells canyon armoury CF wrapped benchmark barrel 1-8 twist, Gary Flach custom brake added, palm swell and high comb added to the Montana stock, Talleys holding a Swarovski Z3 3-10x42 BRH

Nice rifles. Before I read your post, I was thinking that Gary and Mitch likely had their hands on those.

Yup! Sorry I’m late to the party. Shaen did an awesome job and turned down a Bart 2B (I believe) to close to factory dimensions for the first 8” and then finished a bit heavier. There are some pics on his website and a few here:

Idaho Bull hunt link

@23” it shoots the factory 143 Eldx at 3,000 FPS and tiny clusters

It’s a tough combo to beat.

This rifle is currently at my house about to be shipped back to Tim. It’s spectacular in every way. Ridiculously accurate.
